Job description

Our client, a managed services provider in Western New York, is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to join their team!
This is a hybrid/full-time/direct-hire position
Salary based on experience: $175k-$200k + bonus opportunity

Position Summary
A growing technology-services company is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to define and govern its technology strategy, strengthen its technical capabilities, and develop scalable, profitable technology services.
The CTO owns the technical framework within which the company operates, including technology strategy, architecture and standards, cybersecurity direction, service and platform strategy, vendor relationships, technology lifecycle planning, and innovation.
Operating primarily at the strategy, architecture, governance, service-development, and leadership level, the CTO ensures the organization has the technical direction, standards, tools, and capabilities required to deliver consistent customer outcomes and support company growth.
As the organization grows, the CTO will build and lead technical practice owners responsible for developing and evolving specialized standards and capabilities across areas such as Microsoft 365 and Cloud, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and other strategic technologies.
Job Requirements
Required
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in technology, architecture, cybersecurity, cloud, consulting, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience leading technical employees, leaders, architects, or engineers.
  • Experience building or leading a technical team of at least 10 people, directly or through other leaders.
  • Demonstrated success creating and executing a technology strategy through measurable outcomes.
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, develop, delegate, and hold technical employees accountable.
  • Strong strategic and architectural knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity strategy, architecture, controls, and risk management.
  • Experience designing technical standards, service models, or architectures that teams can consistently implement and support.
  • Experience developing, productizing, or improving scalable technology services.
  • Ability to evaluate technology based on customer value, security, supportability, operational impact, cost, and business value.
  • Strong executive communication, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to provide customer technology strategy and executive technical guidance without owning the sales process.
Preferred
  • Experience in an MSP, multi-client technology-services, consulting, cloud, or cybersecurity environment.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, Microsoft Copilot, and automation.
  • Experience developing cloud strategy and modernization plans.
  • Experience in creating a technical practice, department, service line, or leadership structure.
  • Participation in an executive peer advisory group, leadership coaching, or a similar professional-development program.

What Success Looks Like
The CTO is successful when:
  • The company has clear, documented technical standards that teams can consistently understand and execute against.
  • Technical decisions are made intentionally and consistently rather than reactively or based on individual preference.
  • Operations have the technical direction, standards, and guidance needed to deliver and support services consistently.
  • The company's technology services and approved solutions are scalable, supportable, secure, and aligned with customer and business needs.
  • Technical risks, lifecycle concerns, and capability gaps are identified early and translated into clear organizational priorities.
  • New technologies are evaluated through a structured process and adopted when they create meaningful customer or business value.
  • Technical leadership and ownership are increasingly distributed through capable practice owners rather than remaining dependent on the CTO.
  • Technology strategy evolves with the company's growth while remaining practical for Operations to execute.

Behavioral Target
  • The successful candidate will be independent, decisive, and comfortable taking ownership of significant decisions. They should communicate confidently, build strong working relationships, and influence others around a clear technology direction.
  • This role requires someone who works at a fast pace, manages changing priorities, and is energized by new challenges, growth, and innovation. The candidate should be adaptable and comfortable operating from broad goals rather than detailed instructions, while still establishing the standards, accountability, and structure the technical organization needs.
