What is a crypto developer?

Crypto Developers are software engineers who specialize in creating applications, protocols, and tools that use blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. They design and implement smart contracts, decentralized applications (dApps), and maintain the underlying code that powers blockchain networks. Crypto Developers work with programming languages such as Solidity, Rust, or Go, and are familiar with blockchain concepts like consensus mechanisms, cryptography, and token standards. Their expertise is essential to building secure, scalable, and innovative solutions in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crypto developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crypto Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Solidity, Rust, or Go, along with a solid understanding of blockchain architecture and cryptography. Familiarity with smart contract platforms (e.g., Ethereum), version control systems (e.g., Git), and relevant certifications such as Certified Blockchain Developer is highly beneficial. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and ensuring secure code. These competencies are crucial for developing robust, secure, and innovative blockchain solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What are some common challenges faced by crypto developers when integrating blockchain solutions into existing systems?

Crypto developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing security risks like smart contract vulnerabilities, and keeping up with rapidly evolving blockchain protocols. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including backend engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and business analysts—is crucial to address these complexities. Additionally, developers must thoroughly test their solutions to maintain data integrity and comply with regulatory requirements, which can add to project timelines.

What is the difference between Crypto Developer vs Blockchain Developer?

AspectCrypto DeveloperBlockchain Developer
Required CredentialsProgramming skills, cryptography knowledge, blockchain protocolsProgramming skills, blockchain protocols, smart contract development
Work EnvironmentCryptography-focused projects, digital currency platformsBlockchain platforms, decentralized applications, smart contracts
Employer & Industry UsageCrypto firms, fintech, blockchain startupsBlockchain companies, tech firms, enterprise solutions
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in crypto projects, job requirementsDifferences in blockchain development roles, skills needed

Crypto Developers focus on creating and securing digital currencies and cryptographic protocols, while Blockchain Developers build the underlying blockchain infrastructure and smart contracts. Both roles require programming skills and knowledge of blockchain technology, but Crypto Developers are more cryptography-centric, whereas Blockchain Developers focus on the development of blockchain platforms and applications.

Do crypto developers pay well?

Crypto developers typically earn high salaries due to the specialized skills required, such as blockchain programming, smart contract development, and familiarity with platforms like Ethereum. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and the complexity of projects, but overall, it is considered a well-paying role within the tech industry.

Is it hard to get a job in crypto?

Securing a job as a crypto developer can be competitive due to high demand for blockchain skills, but having strong programming knowledge in languages like Solidity or Rust, along with understanding blockchain protocols, can improve chances. Gaining relevant experience through projects, certifications, or contributing to open-source can also help in landing a position.

Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a Tax Lead (Crypto) to join our growing tax team. This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in crypto tax, accounting, or fund operations who is ready to take ownership of digital asset tax compliance and operational workflows within a high-scale investment fund environment.

The Crypto Tax Lead is part of a specialized team responsible for supporting federal and state income tax compliance, transaction reconciliation, and reporting for funds holding crypto-related investments on the AngelList platform. This includes reviewing and validating transaction-level activity across wallets, exchanges, custodians, and internal systems; identifying and resolving exceptions; and analyzing transactions for tax reporting implications and downstream reporting impacts.

You will work closely with tax, fund accounting, engineering, and cross-functional operations teams. This is not a typical tax role - you will operate at the intersection of tax, digital assets, fund operations, and product, helping scale crypto tax workflows across a rapidly evolving investment platform. Over time, you will take increasing ownership of complex transaction analyses, reporting processes, and operational initiatives. This role is well-suited for someone who is highly organized, proactive, and comfortable navigating complex crypto transaction activity in a fast-paced environment.

You will:
  • Support review of U.S. federal and state tax compliance for funds holding crypto-related investments
  • Reconcile digital asset transactions across wallets, exchanges, custodians, and internal systems to support tax reporting accuracy
  • Analyze crypto transactions with tax reporting implications, including staking rewards, token swaps, NFTs, stablecoins, and internal transfers
  • Support tax basis tracking and maintain transaction-level workpapers and supporting documentation
  • Identify and resolve transaction discrepancies, missing activity, and reporting exceptions
  • Perform tax-related operational work tied to fund accounting and digital asset reporting workflows
  • Support research and documentation for complex crypto tax matters and evolving digital asset reporting requirements
  • Work cross-functionally with fund accounting, finance, legal, engineering, and operations teams to gather information and resolve reporting issues
  • Conduct evaluation and testing of proprietary systems to support reporting accuracy and scalability
  • Identify and implement process improvements to optimize crypto tax workflows
  • Help mentor and support Associates and Senior Associates by reviewing work, providing feedback, assisting with workflow management, and supporting onboarding and training on tax processes and systems
  • Contribute to documentation and operational processes as the crypto tax function scales
You have:
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of federal and state tax concepts and reporting requirements
  • Experience working with crypto transactions, wallets, exchanges, and digital asset reporting workflows
  • Familiarity with crypto-related tax reporting concepts, including staking, SAFTs, warrants, token transfers, liquidity activity, and digital asset basis tracking
  • Experience researching and analyzing complex tax and transaction issues
  • Ability to identify issues, investigate discrepancies, and propose solutions independently
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort learning and working within evolving systems and tools
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required or working towards

If you don't tick every box above, we'd still encourage you to apply. We're building a diverse team whose skills balance and complement one another.
