What is cruise planning?

Cruise planning is the process of organizing and coordinating all aspects of a cruise vacation, including selecting destinations, booking accommodations, arranging transportation, and scheduling on-board and shore activities. It often involves researching different cruise lines, itineraries, and packages to find the best fit for travelers’ preferences and budgets. Cruise planners may also assist with travel insurance, dining reservations, and special requests to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cruise planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cruise Planner, you need strong organizational abilities, knowledge of travel industry standards, and preferably a background in hospitality or tourism. Familiarity with booking platforms, cruise line reservation systems, and certifications like CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) accreditation are valuable. Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and persuasive communication skills set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for creating seamless travel experiences, maximizing client satisfaction, and efficiently handling complex itineraries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in cruise planning, and how can they be addressed?

Cruise planning professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating complex itineraries, managing last-minute changes due to weather or regulations, and ensuring seamless communication between guests, vendors, and onboard staff. Staying organized and adopting robust planning tools can help manage details efficiently. Additionally, strong problem-solving skills and adaptability are crucial for quickly addressing unexpected issues and maintaining a positive guest experience.

What is the difference between Cruise Planning vs Cruise Sales?

Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path within the cruise industry.

How do you become a cruise planner?

To become a cruise planner, individuals typically need sales or travel industry experience, strong customer service skills, and knowledge of cruise destinations and products. Many companies prefer candidates with certifications such as the CLIA certification and proficiency in booking software. Training is often provided by the employer to familiarize new hires with their specific systems and sales processes.

How much do cruise planners make?

Cruise planners typically earn between $30,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, sales performance, and location. Many work as independent agents or for travel agencies, often earning commissions on bookings in addition to base pay.

Job description

One of the best-known names in cruising, Princess is the world's leading international premium cruise line and tour company, carrying millions of guests each year to hundreds of destinations around the globe. We give our guests the Medallion Class experience others simply can't. The Love Boat promises something for everyone.
The Manager, Promotions Delivery Operations owns the end-to-end operational delivery of digital promotions across cruise ticketing, pre-cruise planning, and the Princess mobile app. The role ensures promotions are planned, built, tested, launched, monitored, and optimized flawlessly across all digital touchpoints, enabling speed, accuracy, consistency, and scalability across domestic and international markets. The Manager owns the promotion delivery engine and leads a team of three Promotion Analysts aligned to Cruise Ticket (Princess.com), Pre-Cruise Planning (Web & Mobile App), and International Markets (UK, AUS/NZ, Asia, Japan). Success is defined by on-time launches, reduced errors, faster turnaround, and measurable promotional performance.
Here's a summary of what Princess is looking for in a Alaska Product Manager. Is this you?
Responsibilities:
  • Promotion Delivery Operations (Core Accountability): Own the end-to-end promotion delivery lifecycle across cruise ticketing, pre-cruise planning, and mobile app. Translate approved promotional strategies into executable requirements, timelines, and deployment plans; ensure all promotions are accurately configured, tested, QA'd, and launched on time; establish and enforce delivery standards, checklists, and quality gates; and serve as final operational sign-off prior to launch.
  • Workflow, Process & Governance: Define and continuously improve promotion delivery workflows, roles, responsibilities, and SLAs. Reduce execution friction, rework, and defects through standardized processes and documentation; partner with Product and Technology to improve tools, templates, and automation; and maintain clear governance for promotional cadence, prioritization, and change management.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Act as the operational bridge between Revenue, Merchandising, Marketing, CRM, Product, Analytics, and Technology teams. Coordinate promotion readiness across content, pricing, legal/compliance, UX, and tracking, and ensure CRM, email, and on-site promotions are operationally aligned and synchronized.
  • Global & International Promotion Support: Oversee promotion delivery for international websites and markets, including UK, AUS/NZ, Asia, and Japan. Support localization requirements such as market-specific offers, timing, regulatory constraints, and execution nuances, and partner with regional eCommerce teams to ensure consistent global standards with local flexibility.
  • Performance Monitoring & Issue Management: Monitor live promotions for accuracy, stability, and performance; partner with Analytics to validate tracking and identify execution-related issues; lead rapid response and resolution for promotion defects, outages, or misconfigurations; and conduct post-campaign reviews focused on execution quality, learnings, and operational improvements.
  • People Leadership: Directly manage and develop three Promotion Analysts aligned to major business areas; set clear goals, priorities, and performance expectations; build a culture of operational excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement; and coach team members to become subject-matter experts in promotion execution.

Knowledge & Skills:
  • Scope: This is a tactical and operational management role within Digital Commerce and Experience that owns the promotion delivery operating model for Princess digital commerce across domestic and international markets. The Manager is the single point of accountability for promotion execution quality, governance, and readiness, and partners with Merchandising, Revenue Management, Marketing, Product, CRM, and Analytics to translate approved promotional strategy into accurate, scalable execution. The role ensures global consistency while supporting localized international market needs and leads a team of three Promotion Analysts.
  • Problem Solving: The role makes tactical and operational decisions daily to keep promotion delivery running smoothly and on time across high-volume, deadline-driven calendars. Typical challenges include resolving conflicting priorities across markets and stakeholders, preventing and correcting configuration or tracking defects, managing localization and regulatory constraints for international sites, and leading rapid root-cause resolution for live-promotion issues, outages, or misconfigurations.
  • Impact: The role directly impacts the speed, accuracy, and reliability of every digital promotion launched across cruise ticketing, pre-cruise planning, and the mobile app. By owning the delivery engine, standards, and governance, the Manager reduces errors and rework, accelerates turnaround, ensures on-time launches, and improves measurable promotional performance and revenue outcomes across domestic and international markets.
  • Leadership: Leads and develops a team of three Promotion Analysts, setting goals, priorities, and performance expectations while building a culture of operational excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement. Serves as the operational leader and single point of accountability for promotion execution, coordinating cross-functional partners (Revenue, Merchandising, Marketing, CRM, Product, Analytics, Technology) and liaising with revenue leadership (NTR & OBR) to align promotional cadence, content, frequency, and lifecycle.

Essential/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in E-commerce or Marketing required (equivalent experience considered)> Master's in Business or Marketing preferred. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Essential experience required:
  • 5+ years of experience in eCommerce operations, digital production, or promotion execution, including 3+ years managing operational or delivery-focused teams. Deep understanding of promotion setup, QA, and deployment within enterprise eCommerce platforms; experience with Salesforce Commerce Cloud or comparable platforms; strong process design, documentation, and operational governance skills; and the ability to manage complex, high-volume promotional calendars.

  • Preferred: proven ability to build productive relationships and motivate teams; strong experience leading promotion delivery, agency, and testing professionals; demonstrated success driving revenue growth in eCommerce; strong understanding of eCommerce platforms, web analytics, and digital marketing; experience managing large eCommerce websites and pre-cruise planning tools; and proven ability to establish analytics strategy and communicate insights for data-driven decisions.
