What is a Crossbridge in the context of biology?

In biology, a crossbridge refers to the connection formed between actin and myosin filaments during muscle contraction. This structure is crucial for the sliding filament mechanism, where myosin heads attach to actin to pull and shorten the muscle fiber, resulting in contraction. The repeated formation and breaking of crossbridges enable muscles to generate force and movement. Understanding crossbridges is essential in studying muscle physiology and disorders related to muscle function.
