What is a crop hail adjuster?

Crop hail adjusters are insurance professionals who assess and evaluate damage to crops caused by hailstorms and other natural perils covered under crop insurance policies. Their main role is to inspect affected fields, determine the extent of the loss, document findings, and help ensure that farmers receive fair compensation based on their insurance coverage. Crop hail adjusters often travel to various farms, work closely with farmers, and must have a strong understanding of both agriculture and insurance processes.

What are the most common challenges faced by crop hail adjusters during the assessment process?

Crop Hail Adjusters often face challenges such as working in unpredictable weather conditions and navigating large, sometimes remote, agricultural fields. Accurately assessing hail damage requires keen attention to detail and strong communication skills, as you'll need to coordinate with both farmers and insurance companies. During peak storm seasons, workloads can increase significantly, leading to long hours and frequent travel. However, these challenges also provide valuable experience and opportunities to build strong relationships within the agricultural community.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crop hail adjuster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crop Hail Adjuster, you need a solid understanding of agricultural practices, crop types, insurance policies, and loss assessment, typically supported by a background in agriculture or insurance. Familiarity with claim management software, GIS mapping tools, and sometimes a state adjuster license is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and problem-solving skills help build trust with farmers and ensure accurate claims processing. These abilities ensure fair, timely, and precise evaluations that support both clients and insurance providers in critical situations.

Employment Type: Full-time

Job Requisition ID: 2026-390

Requisition Begin Date: 4/28/2026

Requisition End Date: 6/1/2026

Role Overview

  • ProAg has an exciting opportunity for a Crop Adjuster to join our team in central Washington. Imagine joining a team that's part of an organization that shares your passion for American Agriculture. A team that understands the challenges ag producers face and the disproportionate financial risks they shoulder. How do you know this team has that passion and understanding? Because many of us at ProAg still farm and ranch ourselves or were raised on the farm or ranch. It's in our blood.
  • As a ProAg Crop Adjuster, you will make first contact with our policy holder on the farm or ranch that has just experienced a loss. You will work with our customer to complete field inspections, read maps and aerial photos, measure fields and storage bins, collecting production records of farm commodities, all the while assessing damage or loss. You'll stick with each claim for each grower until the work is done and the claim is settled.
  • Reporting to the Area Claims Supervisor, you will work regularly in the field on the farms, climbing grain bins, walking over rough terrain for long distances, etc. You will apply your good judgment, common sense and understanding of ProAg's adjusting guidelines and policy provisions for a variety of Multi-Peril Crop Insurance, Crop Hail, and Named Peril policies.
  • In this position, you will work from home and cover a territory in the state of Washington. This position will require travel of up to 75%, occasionally even beyond your assigned territory.

In this Exciting Opportunity, You Will:

  • Perform fact-finding to determine cause(s) and percentage of loss, exercising your best independent judgment in the handling of claims. Escalate any issues or problems that you can't resolve to the Area Claims Supervisor.
  • Convey regulations and interpretation of procedure to claimants, agents, and industry people on claim situations.
  • Effectively communicate our position on developing industry topics such as new specialty crops or expanding coverage programs.
  • Continuously expand your knowledge of RMA rules and regulations and ProAg procedures for applying all MPCI, Crop Hail, and Federal Crop Insurance regulations.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma
  • Crop insurance experience in claims or compliance or any ag-related experience and background
  • Analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Basic computer and internet applications
  • Communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Reliable means of transportation and the willingness to travel
  • Completion of your Claim Adjuster Proficiency Program (CAPP) certification and/or any applicable licenses required by State agencies preferred.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package
  • Strong learning culture with ongoing development opportunities
  • Opportunities for growth and career advancement
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, with eligibility beginning on your first day of employment
  • Basic life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan with 6% company match
  • 20 days of PTO, three floating holidays, approximately 10 paid holidays, and volunteer time off
  • Paid parental leave
  • Access to our award-winning wellness program, including mental health services, fitness network membership, and a complimentary Headspace subscription
