Job description

Class Summary Job Description The Ballistics Unit is a sub section within the Gwinnett County Crime Scene Unit. The Ballistics Unit is responsible for analyzing all fired cartridge cases collected within the county utilizing the NIBIN system. This is the first level of the Crime Scene Specialist series.

Incumbents are trained on the job and by the ATF to become NIBIN Specialists. This position is responsible for the triage, acquisition and correlation of ballistics evidence into the NIBIN system. This position does not allow promotion passed level of Crime Scene NIBIN Specialist II.

Essential Duties Completes all aspects of the NIBIN system to include triage, acquisitions and correlations of test fires and fired cartridge cases collected from crime scenes. Organizes and sets up test fires to include checking out firearms from evidence and from the firearms lockers in CSI. Ensures guns are safe and visually in working order.

Updates and adds correct information into the evidence database. Keeps up to date status on all aspects of NIBIN data entry. Completes and uploads all reports for chain of custody and record keeping purposes.

Testifies in cour.t Answers any emails or phone assistance regarding the Ballistics Unit and updates investigators on any ballistics leads. Grade The grade for this position is B21(3). Minimum Qualifications Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job; Other Job Requirements/Information Must have a valid driver's license from state of residency

Must complete coursework required to obtain P.O.S.T. certification as an Identification Technician at Department's discretion. Must be able to work rotating shifts, M - F, and On-Call status during weekends and holidays

5% differential for 3-11 & 11-7 shifts, and/or on-call pay. This position may require: 24 hour on call assignment, overtime, or working weekends, holidays, 10-hour, 12-hour, and rotating shifts. This job requires a public safety background check to include motor vehicle histories, criminal histories, and finger printing.

This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
