Job description

Job DescriptionPosition Summary

The selected candidate will manage the daily operations of a scientific research laboratory while providing technical support for research animal activities within the Department of Clinical Sciences. Responsibilities include laboratory management, regulatory and safety compliance, inventory and equipment oversight, and support of molecular biology research projects. The position also provides hands-on care and research support for rabbits and rodents, including health monitoring, specimen collection, peri-operative assistance, and post-procedure care. The ideal candidate combines strong organizational skills with experience in molecular biology techniques, laboratory operations, and research animal handling in an academic research environment.

Brief Work Unit Description

The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Essential Job Duties
  • Oversee the daily operation of the research laboratory, including inventory management, procurement of supplies and equipment, hazardous waste compliance, biosafety oversight, and maintenance of laboratory resources and storage systems.

  • Coordinate laboratory personnel training and ensure compliance with required safety, biosafety, chemical management, and institutional training requirements.

  • Provide research animal care and technical support for rabbits and rodents, including daily health monitoring, handling, blood collection, weighing, peri-operative assistance, and post-procedural observations under veterinary supervision.

  • Assist with research study execution by supporting surgical and imaging procedures, collecting biological specimens and research data, maintaining study records, and facilitating necropsy and tissue collection activities in accordance with approved protocols.

  • GLP certification must be obtained within the first 2 months of employment

  • 2+ years in benchtop lab experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with primary cell culture

  • Molecular biology assays including (but not limited to): RNA isolation, PCR, ELISA, Western blot

  • Proficiency in GraphPad Prism and other data organization studies
