What are crime gun analysts?

Crime gun analysts are professionals who specialize in tracing, analyzing, and interpreting data related to firearms used in crimes. Their work helps solve crimes, prevent gun trafficking, and develop strategies to reduce gun-related violence. Crime gun analysts often use specialized databases and collaborate with other forensic experts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Crime Gun Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crime Gun Analyst, you need expertise in forensic science, firearms identification, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree in criminal justice or forensic sciences. Familiarity with databases like the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), laboratory information management systems, and firearm tracing tools is vital. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set top analysts apart. These skills are crucial for accurately linking firearms to crimes, supporting investigations, and enhancing public safety.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for a Crime Gun Intelligence Analyst?

As a Crime Gun Intelligence Analyst, your daily responsibilities often include reviewing and analyzing firearm-related crime data, coordinating with law enforcement agencies, and preparing reports that inform investigations. You may also work with evidence management systems, perform ballistic analysis, and assist in tracing firearms to their origins.
