Cribl Engineer information

What is a Cribl engineer?

Cribl Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in deploying, configuring, and managing Cribl's data pipeline solutions, such as Cribl Stream. They are responsible for optimizing data routing, transformation, and observability in enterprise environments, ensuring efficient data flow from sources to destinations like SIEMs or analytics platforms. Cribl Engineers often work closely with security, infrastructure, and data teams to enable better log management, cost control, and compliance. Their expertise helps organizations gain actionable insights from large volumes of machine data while reducing data ingestion costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cribl engineer?

To thrive as a Cribl Engineer, you need expertise in data pipeline architecture, log management, and troubleshooting, often supported by experience with observability platforms and a background in IT or computer science. Familiarity with Cribl Stream, Splunk, Elastic Stack, and scripting languages like Python or Bash, as well as relevant Cribl certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help a Cribl Engineer effectively address complex data routing and integration challenges within diverse teams. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring reliable data flow, optimizing system performance, and supporting organizational observability goals.

What are some common challenges Cribl engineers face when integrating data pipelines with existing security and observability tools?

Cribl Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating data pipelines with established security and observability tools, such as compatibility issues with legacy systems, managing data format transformations, and ensuring data privacy and compliance. Close collaboration with security, DevOps, and IT teams is essential to troubleshoot integration hurdles and optimize data routing. Successfully addressing these challenges not only improves data flow efficiency but also enhances the overall observability and security posture of the organization.

What is the difference between Cribl Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectCribl EngineerData Engineer
CredentialsExperience with data routing, observability tools, scripting, and some knowledge of Cribl platformDegree in Computer Science or related field, experience with data pipelines, SQL, and cloud platforms
Work EnvironmentFocus on data observability, troubleshooting, and configuring Cribl solutions within IT or DevOps teamsDesigning, building, and maintaining data pipelines across various systems and databases
Industry UsageUsed in organizations implementing data observability and log management solutionsCommon in data-driven companies managing large-scale data infrastructure

While both roles involve working with data, a Cribl Engineer specializes in configuring and managing Cribl's data routing and observability tools, whereas a Data Engineer focuses on building and maintaining data pipelines across multiple platforms. The roles often overlap in skills like scripting and cloud knowledge but serve different primary functions within data management.

Job description

We are seeking a talented and motivated mid-level Cribl Engineer to join our Visibility Analytics and Automation Team (VAAT). In this role, you will play a crucial role in building, managing, and optimizing our enterprise data pipelines, with a strong focus on feeding our downstream SIEM ecosystem. Your primary focus will be designing and maintaining routing, filtering, and transformation logic using Cribl Stream and Cribl Edge. If you are passionate about logging, SIEM architecture, and solving complex data ingestion challenges, we would love to have you on the team.

What You'll Work On:

  • Pipeline Development: Build, maintain, and optimize high-throughput data pipelines using Cribl Stream and Cribl Edge to ensure efficient data routing, masking, and transformation.
  • Data Integration & Schema Mapping: Normalize incoming log sources to standardized schemas (e.g., CIM, ECS) before routing to downstream SIEM platforms, analytics tools, and storage.
  • Engineering Support: Implement complex routing logic, data masking, enrichment, and replay workflows, utilizing custom JavaScript functions and Regex patterns directly within Cribl pipelines.
  • System Optimization: Monitor system health, assist in managing worker topology, and troubleshoot bottlenecks or failures in the data flow.
  • Automation: Utilize scripting (Python, Bash) and infrastructure-as-code tools (Ansible, Terraform) to automate deployment and configuration management.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear and accurate technical documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures for the observability infrastructure.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in Information Technology, focusing on logging, observability, or SIEM engineering.
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience operating and managing data pipelines with Cribl Stream and/or Cribl Edge in a production environment.
  • 2+ years of experience administering or engineering enterprise SIEM environments, including a strong understanding of log forwarding, indexing, data collection, search architecture, source types, and ingestion-time parsing.
  • HS diploma or GED and 7+ years of experience with supporting IT projects and activities, Associate's degree and 5+ years of experience supporting IT projects and activities, Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience supporting IT projects and activities, or Master's degree and 1+ years of experience supporting IT projects and activities.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD 8570.01-M Cybersecurity Service Provider - Infrastructure Support (CSSP-IS) Certification, including CEH, CySA+, GICSP, SSCP, CHFI, CFR, Cloud+, or CND certification within 30 days of offer accept
  • Ability to obtain a DoD 8570 IAT Level III Certification such as SecurityX (formerly CASP+), CCNP Security, CISA, CISSP (or Associate), GCED, GCIH, CCSP certification within 45 days of CSSP-IS date (or offer accept if candidate already has CSSP-IS Cert).
  • Active Cribl Certification (e.g., Cribl Certified Observability Engineer - CCOE).

Nice If You Have:

  • Relevant enterprise SIEM administrator or engineering certifications.
  • Understanding of data security fundamentals, including encryption, RBAC, and data masking strategies.
  • Strong fundamentals in Linux/Unix administration and working knowledge of transport protocols (HTTP, TCP, TLS) and data formats (JSON, Syslog).

Technical Skills:

  • Regex: Strong proficiency in writing complex Regular Expressions (Regex) for pattern matching, data extraction, and log parsing.
  • JavaScript: Solid proficiency using JavaScript within Cribl's native execution environment to write custom functions, execute advanced data transformations, and manipulate JSON/event payloads inside pipelines.
  • Log Schema Formats: Solid understanding of log normalization concepts and schema alignment, specifically Common Information Model (CIM) or similar frameworks (e.g., ECS, OCSF).
  • Systems & Protocols: Strong fundamentals in Linux/Unix administration and working knowledge of transport protocols (HTTP, TCP, TLS) and data formats (JSON, Syslog).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
