What is a crew assistant?

Crew Assistants are support staff who help ensure the smooth operation of a team, particularly in settings like film, television, aviation, or maritime industries. Their responsibilities typically include performing administrative tasks, assisting with logistics, setting up equipment, and supporting crew members with day-to-day needs. Crew Assistants play a vital role in keeping projects on schedule and handling behind-the-scenes details so that the primary crew can focus on their specialized tasks. The specific duties can vary depending on the industry and the size of the crew. Strong organizational skills, adaptability, and teamwork are essential qualities for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crew assistant?

To thrive as a Crew Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, basic knowledge of workplace safety, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. These competencies ensure efficient support for the crew, smooth operations, and a safe, productive work environment.

What are the most common challenges faced by crew assistants when supporting multiple team members on set?

Effective communication and prioritization are essential to ensure tasks are completed on time without disrupting workflow. Additionally, adapting quickly to changing needs and maintaining a positive attitude under pressure are important for keeping the set running smoothly. Being proactive and organized can help Crew Assistants navigate these challenges and contribute to a successful production.

Job description

$19–$21/hour | No manufacturing experience required — we’ll train you | Great Benefits

Smyth-Minneapolis is seeking candidates who take pride in what they do, love being part of something great, enjoy learning, and want to create new opportunities for our customers. From big moments to everyday moments, you get the chance to make a difference. Come grow and develop your career with us!

The Pit Crew Assistant works alongside our Pit Crew and Press Team to help bring our customers’ labels and packaging to life — packaging that stands out on shelves everywhere. Imagine walking through stores and seeing the labels you helped produce on your favorite brands!

What the Work Is Really Like

This is hands-on, physical work. You'll be cleaning ink and press components as part of your daily routine — it's a job where you can see your progress and take pride in a clean, well-maintained press. If you like tangible work, don't mind getting a little dirty, and want to build real manufacturing skills, this is a great fit.

Shift & Schedule

Shift Available: 5:00pm–5:15am, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (36.75 hours/week)

Overtime is paid after 40 hours; typical OT availability is at least one shift per month.

Room to Grow

This role is a genuine entry point into manufacturing — many of our team members started right here on the Pit Crew. If you show up, learn the role, and take initiative, there's a clear path forward.

Benefits

Our full benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, PTO, paid holidays, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, and much more.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cleaning, returning, and filing all components from the pressroom
  • Following established standard work and good manufacturing practices to ensure quality
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation following standard work
  • Performing daily maintenance tasks to ensure the reliability of tooling and equipment
The Ideal Candidate
  • Effective time management, attention to detail, and multi-tasking skills to meet deadlines on multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively with a diverse group of people and personalities
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the needs of individuals both inside and outside the organization
Education, Skills, and Experience
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Required: Can perform heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Required: Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English
