Creo Modeling information

What is Creo modeling?

Creo modeling refers to the process of creating 3D models and designs using Creo, a powerful computer-aided design (CAD) software developed by PTC. This software is widely used by engineers and product designers to create, analyze, and visualize complex parts and assemblies in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. Creo modeling allows users to efficiently develop detailed digital prototypes, facilitating design changes, simulation, and collaboration throughout the product development cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creo modeling engineer?

To thrive as a Creo Modeling Engineer, strong proficiency in 3D CAD design, mechanical engineering fundamentals, and a relevant engineering degree are essential. Expertise in using PTC Creo software, along with familiarity with PLM systems and industry-standard design practices, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and translating concepts into manufacturable designs. These skills ensure the creation of accurate, efficient, and innovative product models that meet both technical and business needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Creo modeling professionals in a collaborative engineering environment?

Creo Modeling professionals often encounter challenges such as managing complex assemblies, ensuring model consistency across team members, and resolving conflicts when multiple engineers work on shared designs. Coordinating with colleagues from different disciplines (like manufacturing and simulation) requires strong communication and version control practices to avoid errors or duplicated work. Staying updated on the latest Creo features and maintaining organized model structures are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth project workflows.

What is the difference between Creo Modeling vs CAD Designer?

AspectCreo ModelingCAD Designer
Primary FocusCreating detailed 3D models using PTC Creo softwareDesigning 2D drawings and concepts, often using various CAD tools
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in Creo, CAD software, and 3D modelingKnowledge of CAD software, drafting standards, and design principles
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, product developmentArchitectural, industrial, or product design firms
Industry UsageCommon in mechanical and product engineeringUsed across multiple design disciplines including architecture and industrial design

Creo Modeling specialists focus on creating detailed 3D models primarily using PTC Creo, essential for product development and engineering. CAD Designers often work on drafting and conceptual design across various industries. While both roles require CAD skills, Creo Modeling emphasizes 3D modeling expertise, whereas CAD Design may involve broader drafting and design tasks.

Job description

Engineering Drafter

Fairborn, OH

Our client is dedicated to providing the highest quality of services to our clients and employees. We are proud to be the primary partner to top companies in the automotive, aerospace, and defense industries. As a result of our continued growth, we are looking for energetic and personable professionals to join our team.

Position Summary

The Drafter II is a mid-level position responsible for creating accurate 2D drawings and 3D CAD models from existing physical components, assemblies, or legacy drawings supporting aerospace and defense programs. Working with moderate supervision, this role supports reverse engineering, Technical Data Package (TDP) development, manufacturing, and sustainment of military and government hardware by capturing the design intent of existing parts, producing detailed manufacturing documentation, and ensuring compliance with engineering, quality, and government contract drawing standards.

Responsibilities

  • Create and modify detailed 2D engineering drawings and 3D CAD models using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or Siemens NX).
  • Develop and maintain Technical Data Packages (TDPs) in accordance with MIL-STD-31000 and applicable customer or government drawing requirements.
  • Produce manufacturing drawings including dimensions, tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), materials, finishes, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Assist with reverse engineering of mechanical components and assemblies for military and aerospace platforms using physical measurements, 3D scanning data, and existing documentation.
  • Interpret and verify measurements from precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMMs, and laser scanners.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, program management, manufacturing personnel, and quality teams to validate designs and support DoD program requirements.
  • Apply working knowledge of ITAR/EAR export control regulations and DFARS requirements when handling, marking, and transmitting technical data and drawings.
  • Update and maintain engineering documentation, revision histories, and drawing databases in accordance with configuration management practices.
  • Develop replacement parts and technical documentation for obsolete or Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) components.
  • Ensure drawings comply with applicable military and industry drafting standards (ASME Y14.5, MIL-STD, ASME Y14.100, ISO, or company drafting standards).
  • Participate in design reviews and recommend improvements for manufacturability and cost reduction.
  • Support prototype development, First Article Inspection (FAI), and production efforts by providing accurate technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical drafting, reverse engineering, or TDP development, preferably within an aerospace, defense, or government contracting environment.
  • Proficiency in one or more CAD software packages such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or Siemens NX.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD and DoD drawing/documentation requirements (e.g., MIL-STD-31000, MIL-STD-100).
  • Familiarity with ITAR/EAR export control regulations and DFARS requirements as they apply to controlled technical data.
  • Experience with 3D scanning, point cloud processing, or CMM inspection is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, casting, and welding.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, engineering tolerances, and engineering drawing standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Availability for travel to customer locations as required; estimated at 10% - client dependent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D laser scanning and reverse engineering software (e.g., Geomagic Design X, PolyWorks, or MeshLab).
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Knowledge of CNC machining and additive manufacturing processes.
  • Prior experience supporting DoD sustainment, legacy system, or parts obsolescence (DMSMS) programs.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
