Position Purpose: 

The Patient Access Representative is responsible for registering patients in a courteous, professional, and timely manner. Conducts patient/guarantor interviews, explains hospital policies, assists patients understand financial responsibilities, and informs patients on bill of rights. Ensures all necessary demographic and financial data is obtained and accurately documented. Contacts insurance payers for verification of eligibility and benefits as needed.aEnsures any pre-certification/authorization is obtained, to meet individual payment protocols. Process payments received as necessary. Exhibits a thorough knowledge of registration procedures (e.g. collecting, verifying and entering patient data; inputting the admission information). 

Initiates and processes the registration function for all patients entering the organization through the inpatient, outpatient, and emergency departments to include pre-admissions and pre-registration.  

Essential Functions: 

  • Enters comprehensive registration data set into the hospital systems interviewing patients in person or by telephone to secure demographic, clinical and financial information. Evaluates demographic and financial data for potential problems or financial risk, works to resolve these problems with medical staff, financial counselors, and the appropriate administrator on call.  

  • Communicates with physicians and other medical staff for intake of medical diagnosis or procedures for patient reservations as well as interpreting physician orders for ancillary services. Access the online LMRP to check CPT codes against ICD10 codes for medical necessity for all outpatient Medicare patients.  

  • Coordinates bed assignments with nursing staff to facilitate appropriate placement of patients based on condition/diagnosis. 

  • Verifies insurance eligibility and a primary care physician via telephone or on-line program to initiate pre-certification or authorization for service.  

  • Acts as cashier and collects payments from patients and departments. Issues receipts and is responsible to balancing individual cash drawers at the beginning and end of the shift. Process credit card payments on a credit card terminal. 

  • Remains flexible and adapts to variety on the job (e.g., effectively handling unexpected situations and changing conditions). 

  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient information. 

  • Collaborate effectively with other medical professionals to provide high-quality, comprehensive patient care. 

General Job Requirements: 

  • Previous admitting or registration work preferred. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish preferred. 

  • Ability to type a minimum ofa35 wpm without errors required. 

  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills are required. 

  • Meditech Expanse experience preferred.  

  • Course work related to medical terminology preferred. 

  • Experience with healthcare insurance preferred 

  • Ability to deal tactfully with associates, patients, visitors, and the public. 

  • Basic computer literacy and keyboarding skills are required. 

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are required. 

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills are required. 

  • Knowledge of commercial and managed care payors and terminology.
