What is a creative writing internship?

A Creative Writing Internship is a temporary position where individuals, often students or recent graduates, gain practical experience in writing original content for various mediums such as blogs, magazines, advertising, or publishing companies. Interns work under the guidance of professional writers or editors to develop their storytelling, editing, and communication skills. These internships can provide valuable portfolio pieces and networking opportunities, helping interns build a foundation for a career in writing or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative writing intern?

To thrive as a Creative Writing Intern, you need strong writing skills, a solid grasp of grammar and storytelling techniques, and often an academic background in English, journalism, or related fields. Familiarity with content management systems, word processing tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically expected. Creativity, openness to feedback, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that help interns excel in collaborative and deadline-driven environments. These abilities ensure that interns can produce engaging content, adapt to editorial standards, and contribute positively to creative teams.

How does a creative writing intern typically collaborate with editors and other team members during their internship?

Creative Writing Interns often work closely with editors, fellow writers, and content strategists to brainstorm ideas, refine drafts, and ensure their writing aligns with the publication's voice and goals. Regular feedback sessions and editorial meetings are common, providing opportunities for interns to learn and grow. Interns may also participate in peer reviews and contribute to team projects, gaining valuable experience in constructive collaboration and the editorial workflow.

What is the difference between Creative Writing Internship vs Content Writing Internship?

AspectCreative Writing InternshipContent Writing Internship
Required SkillsCreative storytelling, originality, literary skillsSEO, research, clarity, audience engagement
Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, media companies, advertising agenciesDigital marketing firms, online media, corporate blogs

While both internships involve writing, a Creative Writing Internship focuses on storytelling, literary skills, and creative expression, often in publishing or media settings. In contrast, a Content Writing Internship emphasizes SEO, audience engagement, and research, primarily for digital platforms. Understanding these differences helps applicants choose the right path based on their skills and career goals.

Job description

ANINE BING is looking for a Creative Assistant to join our team based in Los Angeles.

This role works directly alongside our Founder & Chief Creative Officer as a trusted extension of her day-to-day, helping maximize her time, bring ideas to life, and ensure the many creative, professional, and personal priorities around her move forward seamlessly.

The scope is intentionally broad and hands-on, spanning creative content and special projects, founder support, travel and logistics, and other general needs.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Work directly alongside the Founder & Chief Creative Officer as an extension of her across creative, professional, and personal priorities.
  • Manage day-to-day support, including calendar, meetings, travel, expenses, appointments, personal errands, household and family logistics, and other needs as they arise.
  • Plan ahead across the Founder’s schedule, travel, shoots, events, and key brand moments to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  • Develop and execute Founder-led content and special projects across Instagram, Substack, newsletters, and other channels, from ideation and research through drafting, imagery, publishing, and cadence.
  • Capture, curate, and edit content for the Founder’s personal social presence, including photography, captions, posting, and scheduling.
  • Support shoots, fittings, events, appearances, and travel, coordinating logistics and capturing organic content in real time.
  • Support personal paid partnerships and collaborations, working with external management and internal teams to coordinate deliverables and timelines.
  • Maintain content and editorial calendars and create mood boards, decks, references, and research to support creative direction.
  • Help keep communication and follow-up moving between the Founder and internal teams, including attending select meetings, capturing actions, and ensuring priorities are carried through.
  • Jump in wherever needed with discretion, flexibility, sound judgment, and a hands-on mindset.
Requirements:
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience, including internships, across creative, editorial, social media, fashion, lifestyle, talent, or executive/personal support.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of education, internships, or hands-on experience.
  • Highly organized, proactive, resourceful, and comfortable managing many different kinds of priorities at once.
  • Strong creative instincts and a natural eye for content, imagery, fashion, and culture.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to understand and reflect the Founder’s voice and the ANINE BING brand.
  • Ability to represent the Founder and brand appropriately across internal meetings, shoots, events, travel, and external-facing moments.
  • Digitally native and confident across social platforms; photography and light photo/video editing skills are a plus.
  • Mature, discreet, and trustworthy when handling confidential company, personal, and family information.
  • Comfortable with a role that blends creative work with practical, hands-on support.
  • Flexible and willing to support shoots, events, travel, and occasional needs outside traditional working hours.

The target compensation range for this role is $60,000–$70,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and other job-related factors.

Benefits & Perks
  • Work/Life Balance: Enjoy flexible work schedules, generous paid time off, and additional summer days to recharge and reset.
  • In-Office Perks: Benefit from a hybrid work schedule and free daily in-office lunches designed to keep you energized, connected, and supported throughout your day.
  • We offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage—with ANINE BING covering a significant portion of the cost. Our benefits extend to your family and include a generous parental leave program.
