What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creative Translator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Translator, you need advanced proficiency in at least two languages, a strong grasp of cultural nuances, and typically a degree in translation, linguistics, or a related field. Familiarity with translation memory tools, CAT software, and localization platforms is often required. Exceptional creativity, attention to detail, and adaptability set outstanding creative translators apart. These skills ensure that translated content captures the intended style, tone, and emotional impact for diverse audiences.

How does a Creative Translator balance fidelity to the original text with adapting content for a target audience?

Creative Translators often face the challenge of preserving the original message's intent and tone while ensuring it resonates culturally and linguistically with the target audience. This requires close collaboration with copywriters, marketing teams, and subject matter experts to adapt idioms, humor, and brand voice appropriately. On a daily basis, Creative Translators review source materials, participate in brainstorms, and provide feedback to ensure translated content feels natural and effective in its new context. Successfully balancing these aspects is key to delivering translations that are both accurate and engaging.

What is creative translation?

Creative translation is the process of adapting content from one language to another while preserving its original intent, style, tone, and cultural nuances. Unlike literal translation, it allows for flexibility and creativity to ensure the message resonates with the target audience. It is commonly used in marketing, advertising, literary works, and branding materials where a direct translation would not be effective or engaging.

What is the difference between Creative Translation vs Localization Specialist?

AspectCreative TranslationLocalization Specialist
Required CredentialsLanguage proficiency, translation certificationsLanguage skills, cultural knowledge, localization tools
Work EnvironmentTranslation agencies, freelance, corporateMultinational companies, agencies, tech firms
Industry UsagePublishing, marketing, mediaSoftware, gaming, e-commerce

Creative Translation focuses on adapting content with an emphasis on artistic and linguistic creativity, ensuring the message resonates culturally. Localization Specialists adapt products or content to specific markets, considering cultural nuances, technical requirements, and user experience. While both roles require language skills and cultural awareness, Creative Translation emphasizes linguistic artistry, whereas Localization involves technical adaptation for target markets.

Job description

Who We Are
We are an award-winning independent creative solutions company that aspires to be the most culturally-influential company in the world. We help ambitious brands harness the power of culture to solve their biggest challenges. As a unique mix of experts in culture, technology, and storytelling, we are united by a passion to grow brands in ways that advertising alone can never do.
We are an entrepreneurial business - not a traditional "ad agency." That means we value resourcefulness and tenacity just as much as we value creativity and intelligence. We're unapologetically ambitious.
We are looking for Creative talent - Art Directors and Copywriters - to join Translation.
What Translation+ Is
Translation+ is our pre-vetted bench of elite freelance talent - the people we call on first when our core team is at capacity or a project demands a very specific skill set. This isn't a cold roster of names we found on a platform. This is a curated circle of trusted collaborators who we know, whose work we believe in, and who we treat as a true extension of our team.
What being a part of Translation+ means:
โ†’ You're first in line when opportunities open up - no cold pitching, no competing.
โ†’ We already know your work - you get the brief and we get moving.
โ†’ You're a true addition to our team, not a vendor we found in the 11th hour - making our work and our people better.
What You'll Do
Creative at Translation means making work that earns its place in culture - not just in the feed. Our Art Directors bring visual ideas to life with intention and craft, leading with a point of view and sweating every detail from concept through execution. Our Copywriters shape the language of brands, finding the line, the headline, and the story that makes people stop and feel something. Both disciplines work in close collaboration across campaigns, brand identity, social, experiential, and beyond. Whether you're a seasoned creative who's led campaigns for major brands, or an up-and-coming talent with a strong book and a sharper instinct, we're building a bench that reflects the full range of what great creative looks like. If you think in culture and make with craft, we want to know you.
How We Engage
We keep our process simple and intentional - because your time matters. Here's what to expect:
Step 1 - Screener Interview A conversation with someone from our Talent team to get to know you, understand your background, and make sure we're aligned on what you're looking for.
Step 2 - Department Interview A deeper conversation with a hiring manager in your area of expertise. This is where we really dig into your work, your experience, and how you operate.
Step 3 - The Decision Once both conversations are done, we make our call. If it's a fit, we bring you onto the bench - and that means something. You're in.
Step 4 - Getting Set Up If there's an immediate need, we'll have you complete the necessary paperwork right away to get you set up in our systems. If there isn't, we'll reach out when a project comes up and provide everything you need to get started at that time. This is a one-time process, and completing it upfront helps us move quickly when the right opportunity comes along.
Step 5 - We'll Be In Touch From there, we'll reach out when an opportunity aligned with your skills and experience becomes available. We'll share the details, and if the timing, availability, and rate work for you, we'll get to work!
On Rates
Rates vary based on the scope, duration, and complexity of each engagement, and are grounded in our full-time salary bands so you know we're coming to you seriously. We'll always be upfront about what we have - from there, it's yours to take if it makes sense for you. No pressure, no obligation. We just ask for a straight answer so we can keep things moving.
