We are currently searching for a Senior Traffic Engineer/Project Manager to support our growing Traffic Engineering Department in the Mid-Atlantic region located in Springfield, VA, Virginia Beach, VA, Washington, DC, or Columbia, MD.

  • The candidate will serve as a Project Manager for the successful delivery of traffic engineering projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary team and lead various tasks on roadway improvements, intersection modifications, complete streets and multimodal safety projects.
  • The candidate will serve as primary point of contact for clients, subconsultants and internal team and will develop, maintain and implement the project goals, schedules and deliverables.
  • The candidate will also support Capital Improvement/Mega Projects in the DMV area and other regions. The successful candidate will work on challenging transportation projects providing technical expertise and ensuring compliance with locality and state DOT standards.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering or equivalent.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage and oversee traffic engineering tasks involving various intersection safety and multimodal improvements as well as large infrastructure projects
  • Serve as technical lead for tasks involving traffic modeling and simulation, traffic design, signal timing optimization and safety/operational analysis
  • Conduct traffic analyses in support of interchange, corridor improvement studies
  • Prepare and review technical reports for traffic studies, interchange access requests, and safety studies
  • Prepare and review traffic signal design plans for new intersections and signal modifications to facilitate multimodal accommodations
  • Lead development of traffic management plan (TMP), signing and pavement marking plans, ITS planning and design
  • Collaborate with diverse team of professionals including engineers, planners and landscape architects
  • Attend project meetings with clients
  • Lead and manage task orders
  • Assist in developing scope and fee proposals, presentations, and reports
  • Provide mentorship to other team members

What you need to have:

  • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • 8 - 15+ years of traffic engineering experience
  • PE is required, PTOE is preferred
  • Proficiency with CADD program as well as safety standards and tools
  • Proficiency in traffic analyses software such as VISSIM, Synchro/Simtraffic, Sidra Intersection
  • Familiarity with VDOT and/or DDOT standards, MUTCD and AASHTO
  • Self-starter and capable of completing tasks with minimal oversight
  • Attention to details and quality driven approach
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
