What is a creative project manager?

A creative project manager oversees all the elements of a creative project. These creative projects usually fall under the marketing department, but there are opportunities in other sections of a company. As a creative project manager, your job duties are to shape the ideas of the project, define clear goals and objectives in consultation with other departments, organize your team, and keep them on task. The creative project manager needs to maintain a balance between allowing the creative talent freedom to explore ideas while still making sure the team meets deadlines and creates a strong project, so you need excellent interpersonal and negotiations skills for this career.

How does a creative project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Creative Project Manager serves as a bridge between creative teams, such as designers and copywriters, and other departments like marketing, product, and client services. They facilitate communication by clearly outlining project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring everyone is aligned. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative meetings are common, allowing the manager to address any blockers quickly and keep the project on track. This collaborative structure fosters a dynamic environment where feedback and ideas flow openly, ensuring that creative outputs meet both strategic objectives and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Project Manager, you need strong project management abilities, experience in creative industries, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Wrike, and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage client expectations effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality creative projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong team collaboration.

Project Manager - Charleston, SC - Community Studio
Looking for people who want to change the world-one community, one school, one learning environment at a time.
At Little, one of the nation's most progressive and future focused design firms, we believe design has the power to improve lives and expand human potential and unlock growth in each of us. We are seeking a purpose driven Project Manager, someone who understands that the environments we shape matter, but how we work together matters even more.
If you're inspired by possibility, fueled by collaboration, and motivated to create meaningful impact, this is your platform.
The kind of Project Manager we're excited to meet
Culture is your highest priority.
You believe culture is the foundation of exceptional work. You nurture trust, inclusivity, curiosity, and joy in every interaction. You understand that a healthy studio culture fuels creativity, strengthens teams, and elevates project outcomes-and you protect and grow it with intention.
And you also bring...
• Deep Community expertise: Preferably in Higher Education or K 12 with a belief that education shapes a better future.
• Creative problem solving that transforms constraints into opportunities.
• A talent for elevating team. You lead with empathy, support others' success, and collaborate with purpose.
• Clear, thoughtful communication in conversation, visuals, and writing.
• Confidence managing complexity, coordinating partners, and keeping projects aligned with vision and momentum.
• A strong design sensibility including space planning, flow, and materiality.
• A commitment to sustainability and long term community well being.
• Ambition and joy. You have a passion for architecture and design and want to have fun at work!
Why Little
At Little, we don't just design environments-we design careers.
We invest in people who are driven to better themselves and eager to elevate their skills, mindsets, and impact. Here, your growth is not a side benefit; it is a core promise.
You'll find:
• Cross mentoring opportunities to both teach and learn across disciplines and generations.
• Intentional coaching to help you strengthen leadership, communication, and strategic thinking.
• Exposure to a wide range of project types and challenges, expanding your professional toolkit.
• A culture that celebrates curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning.
• A community of peers and leaders who truly care about your aspirations and are committed to helping you achieve them.
A Role Where You Can Make a Meaningful Mark
• Join a studio of passionate professionals committed to community-centered design.
• Lead with autonomy. Trusted to guide teams, make decisions, and shape project outcomes.
• Enjoy variety each day in planning, designing, coordinating, problem solving, and inspiring.
• Lead interdisciplinary teams of architects and engineers.
• Steward the entire project journey from concept through construction administration.
• Own outcomes with full support for your professional growth.
• Step into meaningful opportunity for leadership and advancement.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture
• 8+ years of experience in Community projects (Higher Ed, K 12, Civic/Justice), with strong K 12 PM experience
• Architectural registration
• Intermediate Revit proficiency
• A demonstrated commitment to building and sustaining a healthy, inclusive, collaborative studio culture
