Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Craterian Board of Directors seeks a dynamic, passionate leader to serve as the Executive Director for Craterian.

Performances Company (CPC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization, located in Medford, OR.

OUR ORGANIZATION AT-A-GLANCE

Craterian Performances Company serves the community of Southern Oregon as a presenting organization, producing company, and rental house, and as the owner/operator of the 750-seat Craterian Theater, and 24,000 square-foot Collier Creative Center.

  • The Craterianโ€™s mission is to enhance the cultural opportunities of the region and increase community pride by operating a state-of-the-art, multipurpose performance facility; provide a forum for community events, a center for local, regional and national performing artists; foster the development of the performing arts; and to anchor downtown Medfordโ€™s urban renewal.
  • The Craterianโ€™s goals include presenting quality productions that are within the economic reach of a broad spectrum of the community; encouraging quality productions by local performing arts groups and other outside presenters; providing and encouraging educational programs relating to the performing arts; becoming the focal point of a revitalized downtown; and contributing to the economic well-being of Jackson County.
  • Originally built in 1924 for vaudeville, the theater underwent a $5.2mm renovation in the 1990s.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director is responsible overall for the financial health, artistic quality, and community standing of the Craterian organization. The E.D. serves as the chief administrator and acts as facilitator among staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors. As the organizationโ€™s principal fundraiser, this person directs and participates in all major fundraising activities. The E.D. oversees the nature and quality of the organizationโ€™s artistic efforts and programs. This position is the theaterโ€™s ambassador to the community and is responsible for developing positive and productive relationships within our community. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and manages a full-time staff.

DUTIES Financial
  • Develop (for board approval) and manage an annual budget, ensuring financial stability and growth
  • Direct financial operations including accounting systems and reports
  • Perform cost/profit and ticket pricing analysis for all CPC programs
  • Coordinate company audit
  • Provide staff services to the board Treasurer, including preparation of monthly financial reports and commentary for board of directors
Personnel
  • Determine staffing requirements to maximize efficiency and ensure sustainability
  • Hire staff; determine and manage personnel policies, job descriptions, performance evaluations, salary policies and practices, employee complaints and grievances, employee benefits plan, in compliance with all applicable laws
  • Determine and implement operating policies and procedures
Programming
  • Direct CPC programming strategy consistent with mission objectives
  • Establish productive relationships with artistsโ€™ booking and management agencies
  • Research and develop programming opportunities
  • Curate CPC programming based on artistic quality and financial objectives
  • Submit offers and negotiate all performance contracts, and ensure compliance
Development
  • Provide leadership and creative input for fundraising activities
  • Direct organizationโ€™s development activities in collaboration with development director and board of directorsDirect membership and sponsorship programs; develop and recommend changes in these programs as appropriate
  • Develop and nurture significant donor relationships; solicit significant donations
  • Direct capital campaign projects and related fundraising activities
  • Coordinate / Facilitate a planned giving program
Engagement
  • Collaborate with marketing director to ensure effectiveness of sales, advertising, and marketing efforts, including direct mail, display ads, electronic media, and social media
  • Direct creation of all publications/marketing materials, including season brochure and playbill
Facilities
  • Determine, plan for and fulfill office, business equipment, and space needs for all work areas, and theater and production facilities
Board of Directors
  • Assist in board member recruitment and orientation
  • Prepare regular operating reports for the board of directors
  • Provide counsel and input on matters of board policy
REQUIREMENTS

Besides possessing the necessary skill, training and/or experience to perform the described responsibilities and duties, the Executive Director must be able to lift 50 pounds, sit and/or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs on a regular basis; must also be able to remain calm, polite, and positive with patrons and colleagues in high-stress environments and situations.

HOURS: Full-time position. Hours vary, and evenings/weekends are required.
