POSITION: Boardwalk Art Show & Special Events Internship
TYPE: Part-time Hourly
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt
DEPARTMENT: Marketing
REPORTS TO: Director of Marketing & Special Events
SUMMARY: The Boardwalk Art Show & Special Events Internship is a short-term role that supports the Marketing & Special Events team by assisting with a range of creative, strategic, and logistical tasks. This role will support the museum's efforts to broaden engagement and deepen connections with audiences both locally and nationally. The intern will also help identify potential opportunities that drive attendance, increase participation, and promote the Virginia MOCA mission in the cultural landscape.
A major project for the summer term will be contributing to the planning, preparation and execution of the Boardwalk Art Show (BWAS), one of the museum's signature annual events. The intern will be required to attend all three days of the show, assisting the team as needed.
Outside of BWAS, the intern will collaborate across departments to help plan, promote, and execute various museum programs and events throughout the summer term. Interns will gain an understanding of overall museum operations as they support administrative and organizational needs surrounding events. This role is ideal for someone who has an interest in marketing, event promotion and coordination, as well as an interest in contemporary art.
SCHEDULE:
Hours: 8-20 hours per week
Days: Tuesday to Friday
Time: 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Maximum Hours: 120
Note: This internship could begin as soon as August 2026. Some evening and weekend hours may be requested, including the full weekend of Boardwalk Art Show, October 9-11th.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Event Marketing and Coordination
  • Contribute to the planning, preparation and execution of the Boardwalk Art Show.
  • Assist the Director of the Boardwalk Art Show with various tasks as needed.
  • Help prepare and disseminate promotional materials.
  • Contribute to creating detailed timelines for various deliverables and vendor needs.
  • Support day-of event setup.
  • Help maintain an up-to-date inventory of back-of-house beverages and single use products.
  • Research catering options based on event needs.

Administrative Support
  • Assist with administrative tasks by supporting the marketing team with general administrative duties, such as filing, organizing, or preparing materials for marketing events.
  • Assist with inventory management by tracking and maintaining marketing materials and allocating resources effectively.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Strong interest in marketing, communications, cultural institutions, or data analysis
  • Strong research and analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent written communication and presentation abilities
  • Familiarity with digital marketing platforms (e.g. social media and websites)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
