What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creamery Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creamery Worker, you need a solid understanding of dairy processing, food safety standards, and equipment operation, often supported by a high school diploma or food handling certification. Familiarity with pasteurization machinery, packaging systems, and sanitation protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and reliability are important soft skills for maintaining product quality and safe operations. These skills and qualifications ensure adherence to regulations, consistent product quality, and efficient production in a food manufacturing environment.

What is a creamery?

A creamery is a facility where dairy products such as milk, butter, and cheese are processed and manufactured. Creameries may collect raw milk from farms, pasteurize it, and then use it to make a variety of products. Some creameries are large-scale operations supplying supermarkets, while others are small, artisan businesses serving local communities. In addition to production, some creameries offer tours, tastings, or direct sales to the public.

What is the difference between Creamery vs Cheesemaker?

AspectCreameryCheesemaker

Work EnvironmentFactories, dairy farms, production facilitiesCheese production facilities, artisanal or industrial settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in dairy product production, including cream, butter, and dairy-based productsSpecializes in cheese production, aging, and flavor development

While both roles are involved in dairy processing, a Creamery typically refers to the facility or business producing various dairy products, including cream, butter, and milk. A Cheesemaker specifically focuses on producing cheese, often requiring specialized skills and certifications. The roles overlap in dairy handling but differ in product focus and expertise.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in a creamery, and how can new employees effectively handle them?

Working in a creamery often involves maintaining strict hygiene standards, managing time efficiently during production peaks, and handling heavy equipment or ingredients safely. New employees may initially find it challenging to adapt to the fast-paced environment and precise quality controls required for dairy products. To succeed, it's important to stay organized, follow safety protocols closely, and communicate openly with team members to ensure smooth operations and product consistency.

Who We Are

From our humble beginnings to becoming a beloved spot in our community, our story is one of innovation, community, and the pursuit of the perfect scoop. Each flavor tells a story, and every cone holds more than just ice cream—it holds memories, smiles, and moments of pure joy. We pride ourselves on our ever-evolving menu, offering classic favorites and introducing new, exciting flavors to surprise and delight our guests.

Using ice cream as the platform, we pioneer and share experiences that inspire and connect us all.

Position Summary:

The Shift Coordinator is a key part of the chain of service, responsible for delivering a seamless guest experience by coordinating and engaging in daily floor operations and assisting and guiding Scoopers throughout their shifts. This role is essential to upholding operational excellence by participating in and overseeing daily tasks, setting a positive example, and offering on-the-spot operations-based modeling, training, and coaching to Scoopers. As role models, Shift Coordinators foster a positive, guest-focused environment, ensuring all interactions reflect Salt & Straw’s commitment to legendary hospitality.

Essential Functions:

  • Guide Scoopers throughout the shift, delegating tasks according to the daily shift plan/daily visual planner (DVP) to ensure proper break schedules, station rotations, and proactive safety habits (shift warm up and stretching).
  • Support Scoopers by performing a variety of duties including scooping, waffling, running the register, dishwashing, cleaning, and hosting.
  • Consistently deliver excellent service, resolve guest concerns thoughtfully, and enhance the guest experience through personal interactions.
  • Coordinate opening, closing, and daily tasks to maintain shop flow.
  • Ensure that daily and weekly tasks are completed to uphold shop standards and maintain operational excellence.
  • Assist in rolling out new training and provide real-time operations-based coaching to uphold product quality, guest experience, shop safety, and cleanliness standards.
  • Accurately pack TPD (Third-Party Delivery) orders by following company standards and ensuring all items are correctly portioned, packaged, and labeled to maintain quality and guest satisfaction.
  • Ensure company policies, shop standards, and safety protocols are followed, escalating issues as needed.
  • Conduct regular inventory counts for ice cream and other supplies; ensure product quality and food safety standards are maintained.
  • Assist with daily cash transactions by accurately handling cash, maintaining balanced change banks, and ensuring adherence to cash handling protocols.
  • Assist the AGM and the GM with maintenance of daily logbook information tracking cash handling, quality control, and team feedback.
  • Taste/sample a scoop of ice cream daily (including, when possible, different flavors of ice cream, including flavors that might not be the Team Member’s personal preference), to be able to better communicate to customers why they might enjoy each flavor.
  • Foster a positive and engaging work environment for Team Members by ensuring ongoing open lines of communication, inspiring others through your words and actions, coaching for improvement and growth, and embracing Salt & Straw’s mission and core values.
