What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creamery Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creamery Worker, you need a solid understanding of dairy processing, food safety standards, and equipment operation, often supported by a high school diploma or food handling certification. Familiarity with pasteurization machinery, packaging systems, and sanitation protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and reliability are important soft skills for maintaining product quality and safe operations. These skills and qualifications ensure adherence to regulations, consistent product quality, and efficient production in a food manufacturing environment.

What is a creamery?

A creamery is a facility where dairy products such as milk, butter, and cheese are processed and manufactured. Creameries may collect raw milk from farms, pasteurize it, and then use it to make a variety of products. Some creameries are large-scale operations supplying supermarkets, while others are small, artisan businesses serving local communities. In addition to production, some creameries offer tours, tastings, or direct sales to the public.

What is the difference between Creamery vs Cheesemaker?

AspectCreameryCheesemaker
CredentialsMay require dairy processing certifications, food safety trainingOften requires cheese-making certifications, dairy handling experience
Work EnvironmentFactories, dairy farms, production facilitiesCheese production facilities, artisanal or industrial settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in dairy product production, including cream, butter, and dairy-based productsSpecializes in cheese production, aging, and flavor development

While both roles are involved in dairy processing, a Creamery typically refers to the facility or business producing various dairy products, including cream, butter, and milk. A Cheesemaker specifically focuses on producing cheese, often requiring specialized skills and certifications. The roles overlap in dairy handling but differ in product focus and expertise.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in a creamery, and how can new employees effectively handle them?

Working in a creamery often involves maintaining strict hygiene standards, managing time efficiently during production peaks, and handling heavy equipment or ingredients safely. New employees may initially find it challenging to adapt to the fast-paced environment and precise quality controls required for dairy products. To succeed, it's important to stay organized, follow safety protocols closely, and communicate openly with team members to ensure smooth operations and product consistency.

Now Hiring: Ice Cream Scoopers – Salt & Straw

At Salt & Straw, we believe in making it count—every scoop and every guest interaction.

We're hiring Scoopers to create memorable experiences. More than serving ice cream, Scoopers guide guests through our flavors, share ingredient stories, and create meaningful connections.

If you love working with people, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and value kindness, curiosity, and hospitality, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

Scoopers are at the heart of the Salt & Straw experience, creating memorable moments for guests while helping the shop run smoothly.

You will:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create welcoming experiences for every guest

  • Share flavor stories, offer samples, and help guests discover their next favorite scoop

  • Scoop ice cream, make waffle cones, operate the register, and support daily shop operations

  • Greet guests, answer questions, and help guide the flow of the shop

  • Accurately process transactions and assist with online and delivery orders

  • Prepare products according to recipes and quality standards

  • Restock ice cream, supplies, and retail products throughout the shift

  • Maintain food safety, cleanliness, and organization standards across the shop

  • Support dishwashing, cleaning, and other operational tasks that keep the shop running smoothly

  • Work collaboratively with teammates to create a positive and supportive environment

Why You'll Love It Here

  • We offer competitive pay, flexible scheduling, meaningful benefits, and opportunities to grow.

  • Financial Flexibility: Optional earned wage access and a 401(k) match after three months—even for part-time Team Members

  • Health & Wellness: Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits may become available upon reaching eligibility requirements

  • Mental Health Support: Free, 24/7 access to licensed mental health professionals for Team Members and their families

  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible scheduling, paid sick time, paid parental leave, and paid voting time

  •  Education & Growth: Up to $1,800 annually in Educational Assistance plus opportunities to grow into Shift Coordinator, Assistant General Manager, and General Manager roles

  • Team Discount: 30% off all the magic

  • First Dibs on Flavors before the public

  • Pet Insurance and additional wellness benefits

  • Flexible Spending Accounts, commuter benefits, and more

You're a Great Fit If You:

  • Are 16+ years old

  • Can work evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Can work at least 3 shifts per week, including 2 closing shifts

  • Enjoy working with people and creating memorable guest experiences

  • Have strong communication skills and a positive attitude

  • Thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy staying busy

  • Work well as part of a team and support those around you

  • Are curious, dependable, and eager to learn

  • Have food service, retail, coffee, restaurant, hospitality, or customer service experience (preferred but not required)

  • Are comfortable discussing flavors, offering samples, and engaging with guests

Ready to Scoop the Unbelievable? This is more than a job. It’s a chance to build something that matters, with your hands, your heart, and a whole lot of ice cream.
