What is a craft buyer?

Craft Buyers are professionals responsible for selecting and purchasing craft supplies, materials, or finished handmade products for retailers, wholesalers, or craft stores. They evaluate suppliers, negotiate prices, and ensure that the products meet quality standards and align with current trends. Craft Buyers play a crucial role in keeping inventory fresh and appealing, often working closely with artisans and vendors. Their work helps businesses offer unique and desirable craft items to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a craft buyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Craft Buyer, you need strong negotiation, sourcing, and analytical skills, often supported by a background in supply chain management or merchandising. Familiarity with procurement software, inventory management systems, and vendor management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and relationship-building abilities help you collaborate effectively with suppliers and internal teams. These skills ensure cost-effective purchasing, product quality, and reliable supply chains, all vital for retail success.

How does a craft buyer typically collaborate with designers and suppliers to ensure product quality and timely delivery?

A Craft Buyer works closely with designers to understand their vision and product requirements, then communicates these needs to suppliers to source appropriate materials and finished goods. Regular meetings and updates with both parties are common to address production timelines, resolve potential quality issues, and negotiate pricing or delivery schedules. Establishing strong relationships and clear communication channels with suppliers is key, as it helps the Craft Buyer troubleshoot supply chain challenges and maintain consistent product standards. This collaborative approach ensures that creative goals are met while keeping projects on track and within budget.

You will monitor inventory levels, issue purchase orders, track deliveries, and ensure our machinists have what they need to keep the shop floor running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
  • Procurement: Source and purchase raw metals, specialized tooling, inserts, coolants, and shop supplies based on production schedules and ERP/MRP system requirements.

  • Cost Tracking: Assist estimating and project management by quickly sourcing and pricing raw materials for new job quotes.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of purchasing or inventory control experience, preferably within a manufacturing, machine shop, or industrial environment.
  • Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of metals (aluminum 6061, stainless steel, tool steel) and cutting tools used in CNC milling and turning.
  • Software Skills: Proficient with ERP/MRP software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Communication: Strong negotiation skills and clear communication with vendors and internal shop supervisors.
  • Detail-Oriented: Ability to track multiple fast-moving jobs, material certifications (DFARS/RoHS), and delivery schedules accurately.

What We Offer
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
  • Health, dental, and retirement benefits packages
  • Clean, climate-controlled shop environment
