How much do cpu design verification engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for cpu design verification engineer in Colorado is $156,833.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $143,000.00 and $174,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPU design verification engineer?

To thrive as a CPU Design Verification Engineer, you need a strong background in computer architecture, digital logic design, and experience with hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with verification methodologies such as UVM/SystemVerilog, simulation tools, and debugging environments is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong teamwork and communication skills help engineers find and resolve complex design issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure CPU designs are robust, functionally correct, and meet performance and quality targets before production.

What does a CPU design verification engineer do?

A CPU Design Verification Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the design of a CPU (Central Processing Unit) meets its specifications and functions correctly before it is manufactured. They create and run various tests and simulations to identify bugs or design issues, working closely with design and architecture teams to resolve problems. Their work helps ensure high-quality, reliable CPUs for use in computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices.

What is the difference between Cpu Design Verification Engineer vs Cpu Validation Engineer?

AspectCpu Design Verification EngineerCpu Validation Engineer
Primary FocusVerifying the correctness of CPU design through simulation and testing during developmentValidating the CPU's performance and functionality in real-world scenarios post-design
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, simulation labs, hardware description languagesTesting labs, hardware platforms, system integration environments
Required SkillsHardware description languages (Verilog/VHDL), simulation tools, debuggingHardware testing, scripting, performance analysis

While both roles focus on CPU quality, the Cpu Design Verification Engineer concentrates on verifying the design before manufacturing, whereas the Cpu Validation Engineer tests the CPU in real-world conditions after production. Both roles are essential in ensuring a reliable and high-performance CPU.

What are some common challenges faced by CPU design verification engineers during project cycles?

CPU Design Verification Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex testbench environments, ensuring thorough coverage of all functional scenarios, and debugging intricate issues that may arise during simulation. They must also coordinate closely with design and architecture teams to clarify specifications and quickly resolve ambiguities. Balancing tight project deadlines with the need for exhaustive verification is another frequent challenge, requiring strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Job description

Responsibilities
Overview
This role is responsible for mechanical engineering design and analysis of complex spacecraft and payloads, spanning from the lowest-level components, all the way to the space vehicle level. As a mechanical engineer on our team, you will drive design excellence into wide range of OSS products and programs, through all phases of design until you witness your designs on orbit.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own design and development of custom mechanical and electromechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Create detailed designs to implement part concepts and generate CAD models in SolidWorks for components, assemblies, and space vehicles.
  • Apply first-order hand calculations and empirical formulas to assess and iterate on your designs rapidly.
  • Validate your designs by building development articles to test and rapidly iterate on the design.
  • Develop design criteria, collaborate on requirements, and drive system-level optimization.
  • Generate detailed production drawings using geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and perform a tolerance stack up analysis.
  • Drive holistic design for manufacturing methods (DFM) to create elegant designs with a focus on piece part and process count reductions, error proofing at every step of fabrication and integration, and consistent performance and production metrics.
  • Collaborate effectively with avionics, structural, thermal, systems engineering, program management, and AI&T teams with strong internal customer focus.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering or computation field plus 5-7 years,
MS plus 3-5 years, or PhD plus 0-2 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering positions.
  • Expertise with mechanical design of wide variety of products: design modeling, mechanical design and analysis, GD&T, 2D drawing creation and drafting.
  • Experience working as a part of a cross-functional integrated product team (IPT) to include programmatic leaders.
  • Experience working in space or aerospace industry, or a related high-reliability field.
  • Experience utilizing SolidWorks with PDM, or a related mechanical engineering tool (NX, Catia, ProE).
  • Experience performing prototype builds, design verification and validation testing, and integration into next level assemblies.

Preferred
  • Experience developing hardware for high reliability space missions: spacecraft, electro-optical payload, radio-frequency payload.
  • Experience with electromechanical systems such as motors or actuators.
  • Ability to help in other areas with experience in thermal design and analysis (Ansys Thermal Desktop) or structural design and analysis (Siemens FEMAP).
  • Experience in all phases of product development, from requirements, through prototype, through design verification and validation and assembly integration and test (AI&T).
