What is CPS Restorative Justice?

CPS Restorative Justice is an approach used within Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and other educational settings that focuses on building relationships, repairing harm, and restoring community rather than relying solely on punitive discipline. This practice encourages dialogue, accountability, and empathy among students, staff, and families. Restorative justice in schools aims to reduce suspensions and expulsions, improve school climate, and address the root causes of conflicts or behavioral issues. It often involves restorative circles, mediation, and collaborative problem-solving.

How does a CPS Restorative Justice practitioner typically collaborate with social workers, families, and community partners to support positive outcomes for children?

A CPS Restorative Justice practitioner works closely with social workers, families, and community partners to facilitate open dialogue, build trust, and address the underlying causes of harm within families. They often lead restorative circles or conferences, bringing together all parties to collaboratively develop reparative solutions and support plans tailored to each family's unique needs. This role requires strong communication, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills, as well as the ability to coordinate resources and follow up on action plans. Regular collaboration helps ensure that interventions are holistic, culturally sensitive, and focused on the long-term well-being of the children involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPS Restorative Justice practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPS Restorative Justice Practitioner, you need a background in social work, counseling, or education, along with knowledge of restorative practices and child protection systems. Familiarity with restorative circles, mediation techniques, and case management software is typically required, and certifications in restorative justice or trauma-informed care are advantageous. Strong interpersonal communication, cultural competence, and conflict resolution skills help practitioners effectively engage families, children, and stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for building trust, facilitating positive outcomes, and repairing relationships within child protective services contexts.
