Cpg Procurement information

What is CPG procurement?

CPG procurement refers to the process of sourcing and purchasing goods, materials, and services needed by companies in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry. This involves managing supplier relationships, negotiating contracts, ensuring quality standards, and optimizing costs for items like raw materials, packaging, and finished products. Effective CPG procurement is crucial for maintaining supply chain efficiency, reducing expenses, and ensuring timely product availability in the market. Professionals in this field often work closely with suppliers, internal teams, and logistics partners to achieve business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPG procurement professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPG Procurement professional, you need strong negotiation skills, supply chain knowledge, and a background in business or procurement, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or relevant certifications like CPSM. Familiarity with procurement software (e.g., SAP Ariba), ERP systems, and supplier management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, analytical thinking, and relationship-building abilities set top performers apart in this field. These skills and qualifications are crucial for securing quality goods at competitive prices and ensuring a resilient supply chain in the fast-paced consumer packaged goods industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in CPG procurement, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in CPG procurement often face challenges such as managing supply chain disruptions, balancing cost savings with quality, and maintaining strong supplier relationships. These challenges can be addressed by implementing robust risk management strategies, leveraging data analytics for better forecasting, and fostering open communication with suppliers. Continuous professional development and staying updated on market trends can also help procurement professionals anticipate and adapt to industry shifts.

Job description

AeroFarms is building out our procurement function, and we're looking for a Manager of Procurement to be a key partner in that effort. This role is well-suited for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment and is energized by creating structure where it doesn't yet exist. You'll work closely with the Director of Procurement and cross-functional stakeholders (Finance, Operations, Sales, FSQA, and Engineering) to manage supplier relationships, drive cost savings, and bring rigor to sourcing processes. We're looking for someone who can think outside the box — whether that's navigating a supply chain disruption, identifying a non-obvious cost savings opportunity, or finding creative ways to support innovation and new product development.
This is a hybrid position.  We would like someone who can be on-site in Danville 1-2 days/ week. What You'll Do
  • Own day-to-day management of key supplier relationships, including delivery timelines and issue resolution
  • Manage and maintain purchase orders end-to-end, including creation, tracking, and updates within the ERP system
  • Lead RFI/RFP processes from build-out through supplier selection and transition, driving COGS reduction across direct and indirect spend categories
  • Own category management strategy, balancing cost, quality, and supply continuity across assigned spend categories
  • Coordinate with domestic and overseas suppliers, inbound freight, customs brokers, and warehouse teams to ensure timely replenishment of materials
  • Develop contingency plans to mitigate supply chain disruptions and demand volatility
  • Own and maintain supply planning for assigned categories, applying strong forecasting and inventory management expertise to ensure continuity of materials
  • Partner with Finance to ensure accuracy across invoices as well as maintaining contracts within the ERP
  • Prepare clear, leadership-ready reporting and updates on supplier performance, cost initiatives, and procurement projects
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience in procurement or supply chain, with exposure to strategic sourcing
  • Demonstrated experience building RFI/RFP processes from the ground up
  • Track record of identifying and delivering COGS reduction initiatives
  • Strong analytical skills, including comfort with Excel-based cost modeling and inventory tracking
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to senior stakeholders
  • Strong collaboration and relationship management skills, including Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), with the addition to build trust across internal stakeholders
  • Strong proficiency with ERP systems (Dynamics, SAP, or NetSuite)
  • Experience working within Supply Planning
  • Experience supporting Innovation and Commercialization processes
Nice to Have
  • Experience with food-grade packaging materials
  • Background in indirect procurement categories
  • Experience sourcing agricultural materials or working with agtech/CPG supply chains
