What Are the Qualifications to Get a CPA Internship?

The qualifications that you need to get a CPA internship include enrollment in an accounting or finance degree program, math skills, and a knowledge of accounting practices and principles. Some programs may only be available to undergraduate students, master’s degree students, or recent graduates, so be sure to ask which level of student they prefer. Most CPA-related internships are for students who are preparing to take the certification exam to become a certified public accountant. Many programs offer college credit, and some seek applicants who have the willingness to work in the firm where they intern after they have become CPAs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPA Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPA Intern, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and progress toward a degree in accounting or a related field. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks or Excel, and sometimes basic knowledge of tax preparation tools, is typically expected. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work well in a team help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are essential for accurately supporting client accounts, learning quickly, and contributing value within a professional accounting environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a CPA internship?

As a CPA intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with audit fieldwork, preparing and analyzing financial statements, performing data entry for bookkeeping, and helping with tax preparation. Interns often collaborate closely with staff accountants and supervisors, gaining exposure to real client work and learning industry-standard processes. This hands-on experience helps you develop practical skills and provides insight into the daily operations of a public accounting firm. You may also participate in team meetings and training sessions, which are great opportunities to ask questions and broaden your professional network.

What is a CPA internship?

A CPA internship is a temporary position, typically held by accounting students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in the field of accounting under the supervision of licensed Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). Interns often assist with tasks such as preparing financial statements, conducting audits, and performing tax-related work. The internship is designed to help students apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations, gain practical skills, and build professional networks. Completing a CPA internship can be an important step toward fulfilling the experience requirements for CPA licensure. It also enhances a resume and improves job prospects after graduation.
