What is a CPA intern?

CPA interns are students or recent graduates who work at accounting firms or finance departments to gain hands-on experience in the field of accounting. Their work typically involves assisting with audits, preparing financial statements, conducting research, and supporting certified public accountants (CPAs) with various accounting tasks. CPA internships provide valuable exposure to real-world accounting practices and can help interns decide if they want to pursue a CPA license. These positions also help interns build professional networks and enhance their resumes for future job opportunities.

What do CPA interns do?

As a CPA Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks including assisting with tax preparation, conducting audits, performing reconciliations, and supporting financial statement analysis. You may also help with data entry, research relevant tax laws, and participate in client meetings under supervision. The work environment is typically fast-paced, and you'll collaborate closely with senior accountants and audit teams, providing valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities within the firm.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPA intern?

To thrive as a CPA Intern, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and progress toward or completion of a relevant degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and exposure to tax preparation or audit tools is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, organization, and effective communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are essential for ensuring accurate financial work, supporting senior accountants, and contributing to a firm's overall efficiency.

Job description

Jennie Joiner with Forum Group PNW is partnering with an established CPA firm in Salem, Oregon to add a Staff CPA / CPA Candidate to their team. This is a newly created position due to growth and an excellent opportunity for someone earlier in their CPA career who is looking for a firm where they can develop strong client relationships, take on increasing responsibility, and build a long-term career. This firm works closely with individuals, small to mid-sized businesses, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations, providing tax preparation, accounting, review, and compilation services. They do not perform audit work.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare individual, business, trust, estate, and nonprofit tax returns
  • Assist with financial statement reviews and compilations
  • Work directly with small business clients on accounting and tax matters
  • Prepare and review journal entries and financial information
  • Research and resolve accounting and tax-related questions
  • Develop relationships with clients and become a trusted resource for their accounting needs
  • Work closely with experienced CPAs and accounting staff
  • Gradually take greater ownership of client relationships and engagements
  • Assist with additional accounting and tax projects as needed
  • Strong organizational skills required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA license or actively working toward CPA eligibility/licensure
  • Prior public accounting and tax experience strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of general accounting principles and journal entries
  • Experience preparing individual and/or business tax returns
  • QuickBooks experience
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Experience with professional tax and accounting software preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate work
  • Comfortable communicating directly with clients
  • Professional, dependable, and able to work independently without significant oversight

The ideal candidate will be capable, easygoing, collaborative, and low drama. This is a small, close-knit office where employees genuinely work well together and support one another. They are looking for someone who will complement that environment and who is interested in learning from experienced team members rather than coming in with the expectation of immediately changing how the firm operates. This is also an opportunity for someone who wants stability and long-term growth rather than continually climbing to the next firm or corporate position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take on their own clients over time, increase their earning potential based on production, and potentially have a future path toward partnership.

Schedule & Environment:

  • 100% onsite in Salem, Oregon
  • 40-hour workweek with flexibility around scheduling
  • Nice business casual environment
  • Collaborative, mature, and professional office culture
  • Autonomy without micromanagement
  • Additional hours expected during busy season, with options for additional compensation or time off outside of busy season

Benefits:

  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee
  • 401(k) with 6% employer contribution
  • Vacation and sick time
  • Short-term and long-term disability
  • Life insurance
  • Flexible spending account
  • Flexible scheduling

If you're a CPA or CPA candidate looking for a smaller firm where you can build meaningful client relationships, continue developing your skills, and have the opportunity to grow into a significant role within the practice, reach out to Jennie Joiner directly to find out more or apply online today!
