Position Overview

Employed by Covenant HealthCare | Stationed at Scheurer Health (Michigans Thumb Region)

Covenant HealthCare, a premier non-profit health system in Saginaw, Michigan, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Gastroenterologist to join our growing team. This unique and impactful opportunity involves being stationed directly within Michigan's rural Thumb Region, providing exceptional digestive care within our partner, Scheurer Health.

As a key specialist embedded in the community, you will bridge advanced specialty care and rural medicine, establishing a dedicated local GI presence so residents of Huron County can access essential diagnostic and preventative care close to home.

Core Clinical Responsibilities

In this role, you will manage a broad spectrum of acute and chronic disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system. Your practice will balance outpatient clinical management with advanced hands-on endoscopic procedures:

  • Routine Endoscopy: Perform standard diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopies (including colonoscopies and EGDs) to screen for, diagnose, and treat conditions like colorectal cancer, polyps, ulcers, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Diagnose and provide long-term care plans for chronic conditions including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD - Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Celiac disease, and severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
  • Hepatobiliary Care: Evaluate and manage patients presenting with liver diseases (cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver disease) and pancreaticobiliary disorders.
  • Preventative Screenings: Lead local colorectal cancer screening initiatives, providing a vital preventative service to an underserved rural population.
  • Care Coordination: Coordinate closely with local primary care providers at Scheurer Health for referrals, while maintaining a seamless pathway to Covenant HealthCares tertiary facilities in Saginaw for patients requiring highly specialized inpatient or surgical interventions.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • MD or DO from an accredited program.
  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship.
  • Board Certification or Eligibility in Gastroenterology.
  • Eligible for an unrestricted Michigan Medical License and Controlled Substance/DEA registration.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a genuine desire to serve rural patient populations.
