What is a court runner?

Court runners are professionals who assist law firms and legal departments by hand-delivering legal documents, filings, and other materials to courts and other legal offices. Their duties often include picking up and delivering documents, filing paperwork with court clerks, obtaining signatures, and sometimes retrieving records. Court runners play a vital role in ensuring that legal documents are submitted on time and in compliance with court procedures. They often work under tight deadlines and are familiar with local court systems and protocols.

What does a court runner do?

As a court runner, your job is to transport documents to or from a court. In this role, you may verify that you have the correct documents for a case or trial, gather additional information as necessary, and pickup and deliver materials on behalf of an attorney. Many court runners work for a law firm, though some operate independently. Understanding where and when to submit legal documents is essential to your success in this role. Despite the name, this job should not be confused with court assistants or administrative staff. Depending on the employer, you may also perform other office tasks, such as taking telephone calls.
