About the Opportunity

The United States District Court is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Financial Specialist to join the Clerk's Office in Madison, Wisconsin.

In this role, you will support the court's financial operations by assisting with accounting, accounts payable and receivable, procurement, facilities coordination, and financial reporting activities. This position plays a critical role in maintaining financial accuracy, ensuring compliance with federal policies, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the court.

What You'll Do

Financial & Accounting Responsibilities

  • Maintain, reconcile, and review accounting records, journals, funds, and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of funds received and disbursed by the court.
  • Prepare, update, analyze, and distribute financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Process deposits, receipts, and daily cash balancing activities.
  • Review invoices, vouchers, and reimbursement requests for accuracy and compliance.
  • Reconcile deposited, transferred, and disbursed funds.

Procurement & Purchasing

  • Assist with purchasing supplies, equipment, furnishings, and services.
  • Prepare requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Support vendor communications and price negotiations.
  • Maintain purchasing records and documentation.
  • Verify deliveries against purchase orders and prepare receiving reports.

Facilities & Administrative Support

  • Assist with property inventory and asset disposal processes.
  • Support facilities and space management projects.
  • Monitor and respond to day-to-day facilities-related issues.
  • Participate in project meetings and coordinate administrative activities as needed.
  • Provide additional support to the Administrative Manager and court operations.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, banking, payroll, auditing, or related financial operations.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and financial procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a government, legal, judicial, banking, or financial office environment.
  • Experience using automated accounting or financial management systems.

Minimum Experience Requirements

CL-25 Level

  • Two years of general work experience, including at least one year of specialized financial experience.

CL-26 Level

  • Two years of general work experience, plus two years of specialized experience in areas such as:
    • Accounting
    • Budgeting
    • Auditing
    • Financial Reporting
    • Financial Administration

Relevant experience may come from law firms, banking institutions, insurance companies, educational organizations, social service agencies, corporate accounting departments, payroll operations, or similar environments.
