Lehman College School of Continuing & Professional Studies (SCPS) seeks qualified instructors with experience teaching American Sign Language and preparing students to communicate with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Responsibilities
Instruction/Curriculum/Administration
- Provideย virtual instruction through the Collegeโs digital learning environment platform and other technologies
- Provide curriculum development including creating curricula, and planning course content and methods of instruction in a manner designed to assist the student to achieve the specific course objectives
- Provide each student and College staff at the beginning of each course with a syllabus / course outline
- Prepare and administer written, oral, and performance activities, tests, and assessments to students
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance, and other records
- Proficient in independently using the College's various platforms, particularly those for instructor management, course management, payroll, communication, and enrollment management, which require high accuracy and attention to detail
- Provide prompt and efficient service to College staff
- Participate in College meetings as appropriate
Program of Study
- Teach courses in American Sign Languageย virtual
- Teach ASL grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure, using a variety of methods like visual aids, interactive activities, and storytelling
- Create opportunities for students to practice signing in different contexts, and offer constructive feedback to help them improve their fluency and accuracy
Required Qualifications
- Experience teaching American Sign Language
Preferred Qualifications
- MA/MS degree in ASL teaching, Deaf Studies, or related field
- National certification (i.e., American Sign Language Teachers Association); ASLPI score of 4.0 or higher (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview); and/or New York State Teacher Certification American Sign Language (130)
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf community
- Experience using Google Classroom or another online platform for course organization
