The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
Inland Marine provides protection for business properties that are mobile in nature or require unique valuation. Coverages extend to properties that are owned or in a business's care related to construction, transportation, fine art, and renewable energy. As an AVP, Underwriting Officer, Inland Marine, you are an underwriting subject matter expert and leader of a team of underwriting officers. You play a central role in a home office underwriting team and share accountability for the countrywide profitability, growth, and retention of business for your assigned industry segment. To that end, you will deploy your leadership skills and underwriting expertise to drive the development and successful execution of national underwriting strategies, lead complex Collaborative Underwriting Review Evaluations (CUREs), champion the development of underwriting capabilities, and uphold underwriting compliance and quality assurance within your segment.What Will You Do?
  • As an underwriting leader, assess, design, implement, and drive successful underwriting strategies and practices, assuming responsibility for countrywide profit and growth objectives.
  • Oversee and influence underwriting execution through the most complex individual risk and/or portfolio CUREs as well as through the evaluation of underwriter proficiency and underwriting quality.
  • Provide strategic direction and support for team and take responsibility for coaching, training, and performance management.
  • Lead the development of key underwriting capabilities and best practices through coaching and trainings while educating underwriters on strategy and guidelines to enhance countrywide efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitor trends, emerging issues, and underwriting results for national book of business. Leverage findings to develop countrywide business strategies and partner with home office and field leadership to drive execution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten or more years of commercial underwriting experience with experience in Inland Marine.
  • Expert level knowledge of risk appetite and risk selection, Inland Marine products, as well as the regulatory environment and the national and local insurance marketplace.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to proactively identify underwriting and financial challenges and analyze available information to make timely decisions in alignment with risk appetite.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead and influence others.
  • Strong team building and inclusive leadership skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external partners.
What is a Must Have?
  • Eight years of commercial underwriting experience.
  • Two years of people and/or portfolio leadership experience.
