POSITION SUMMARYThe Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will have direct responsibility for providing basic information about breastfeeding promotion and management to expectant and lactating women. Promotes breastfeeding through informal interaction with mothers/prenatal, lead/provide breastfeeding support groups and provide telephone/in person assistant to nursing mothers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following)
  • Contacts all prenatal women interested in breastfeeding referred by WIC personnel.
  • Provide breastfeeding counseling and follow-up based on Nutrition Practice Guidelines and BFPC Policy and Procedures.
  • Provide written and verbal information about breastfeeding to all prenatal women.
  • Schedule on or off-site breast-feeding workshops as needed for WIC participants and community residents.
  • Evaluate all breastfeeding educational material for appropriateness.
  • Provide in-service training for TCA Health, Inc. staff on the nutritional and socioeconomic aspects of breastfeeding, as well as the myths.
  • Document all WIC client contacts using Peer Counselor codes and case notes in IWIC
  • Refer breastfeeding mothers/babies when further assistance is needed.
  • Monitor individual progress by follow-up calls, mailings and home visits.
  • Provide breastfeeding education at all TCA Health sites, including WIC as well as provide education to community agencies in collaboration with TCA Health
  • Attend all meetings, conferences, and trainings as assigned via telephone or off-site
  • Complete Peer Counselor reports on a weekly basis
  • Travel to WIC sites on assigned days
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the program
  • Will follow role assignments that are in alignment with the Patient Centered Medical Home Standards and participate in all Patient Centered Medical Home efforts.
Assumes other duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Good organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Must be able to provide service in a discrete, confidential and sensitive manner.
  • Ability to make sound judgments.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED completed.
  • Complete Loving Support Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training.
