Job description

St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers

Location: Recovery Campus - Massena, NY

Position: Full-time Counselor

Shift/schedule: Sunday & Monday / 3:00p-11:00p and Tuesday-Thursday / 8:00a-4:30p

Pay Range: $45,000.00/yr to $100,000.00/yr


Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of a Qualified Health Professional, functions as a primary counselor responsible for the effective case management of an appropriate caseload.


Education and Training: Minimum requirement of Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or other QHP credential as per NY State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services regulations. Bachelor's degree in human services or related field, master's degree preferred. Must be CPR certified. Must be computer literate.

Qualifications and Requirements: Minimum of three years of behavioral health care experience or five years in the behavioral health field with a concentration in chemical dependency.


Essential Duties:

  1. Develop and maintain therapeutic relationship with residents.
  2. Actively participate in clinical supervision.
  3. Function as a supportive multi-disciplinary team member.
  4. Support resident retention initiatives.
  5. Facilitate didactic lectures related to chemical dependency and associated subjects.
  6. Facilitate and document group therapy sessions.
  7. Complete thorough admission procedure for residents.
  8. Complete accurate and thorough clinical summaries and diagnostic impressions.
  9. Develop Resident-Centered Master Treatment plans utilizing Strengths, Needs, Abilities, Preferences (SNAP) approach.
  10. Discuss viable and appropriate aftercare planning with residents throughout treatment.
  11. Secure appropriate recovery environment for residents upon discharge from program.
  12. Provide weekly individual sessions for residents.
  13. Document weekly treatment plan review and progress notes per compliance regulations, clearly identifying treatment received and progress demonstrated.
  14. Create Discharge Summaries that accurately reflect resident progress and rationale for discharge.
  15. Develop Aftercare Plans that accurately reflect resident progress.
  16. Complete accurate and timely documentation of case management and counseling responsibilities.
  17. Adhere to all documentation and treatment guidelines.
  18. Communicate in an objective manner with colleagues regarding resident concerns, either in verbal or written form.
  19. Demonstrate consistent improvement in counseling skills and techniques.
  20. Demonstrate consistent familiarity of and sensitivity to the culture.
  21. Display professional image, appearance, and behavior reflective of SJATRC Mission, policies, and procedures.
  22. Assure compliance with all necessary regulations.
  23. Actively participate in meetings, committees, and quality assurance activities.
  24. Maintain continued professional education.
  25. Maintain NYS Licenses and/or credentials as appropriate.
  26. Perform other duties as assigned by Program Director.
  27. Conduct observational rounds of facility during scheduled shift.
  28. Provide conflict resolution support for and between residents.
  29. Provide support and counseling to residents other than assigned caseload as needed.
  30. Respond to emergency situations in accordance with SJATRC policies and procedures.
  31. Communicate pertinent clinical information to other staff through documentation.
  32. Assess and monitor residents experience signs and symptoms of withdrawal using appropriate withdrawal scales.
