Cost Segregation Manager information

What does a Cost Segregation Manager do?

A Cost Segregation Manager specializes in analyzing commercial properties to identify and reclassify assets for accelerated depreciation, which can help property owners reduce their tax liabilities. They oversee the process of breaking down a property's components, such as electrical systems, plumbing, and finishes, to maximize tax savings. Their role involves working with engineers, accountants, and clients to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with IRS guidelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cost Segregation Manager?

To thrive as a Cost Segregation Manager, you need a strong background in accounting, tax law, real estate, and engineering, often supported by a CPA, engineer, or similar relevant degree. Familiarity with cost segregation analysis software, tax depreciation schedules, and IRS guidelines is essential, and certifications like CPA or PE can enhance credibility. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and present findings to clients and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for maximizing clients' tax benefits, ensuring compliance, and delivering accurate and defensible cost segregation studies.

How does a Cost Segregation Manager typically collaborate with engineering and tax teams during a project?

A Cost Segregation Manager works closely with both engineering and tax professionals to ensure accurate identification and classification of building components for tax purposes. The manager coordinates site visits with engineers to analyze construction details and gather the necessary data. They then collaborate with tax specialists to interpret IRS guidelines and optimize depreciation strategies. Strong communication and teamwork are essential, as the role often involves synthesizing technical findings into reports that support tax positions and withstand audits.

What is the difference between Cost Segregation Manager vs Cost Segregation Analyst?

Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Your opportunity to make a real impact and shape the future of financial services is waiting for you. Let's push the boundaries of what's possible together.

As a Senior Director of Software Engineering  Global Payroll at JPMorgan Chase within Corporate Technology - HR & Payroll Technology, you lead multiple technical areas, manage the activities of multiple departments, and collaborate across technical domains. Your expertise is applied cross-functionally to drive the adoption and implementation of technical methods within various teams and aid the firm in remaining at the forefront of industry trends, best practices, and technological advances.

This role does not manage Payroll Operations or "run payroll." It owns the technology platforms and integrations that enable Payroll Operations to execute payroll accurately and on time across the U.S. and multiple countries - supporting a mission-critical, deadline-driven, zero-tolerance-for-error workload with strong controls, resiliency, and compliance-by-design.

Job responsibilities

  • Leads multiple technology and process implementations across departments to achieve firmwide technology objectives, with a focus on global payroll and time technology platforms and integrations
  • Owns the technology strategy, engineering delivery, and lifecycle management for Oracle HCM Payroll and Time platforms, including configuration enablement, upgrades, environment management, and integration architecture
  • Leads technology enablement and integration patterns for ADP GlobalView and ADP Celergo, ensuring reliable, controlled, and observable data flows that support global payroll processing
  • Directly manages multiple areas with strategic transactional focus, ensuring platforms and integrations meet high standards for availability, accuracy, security, auditability, and operational stability
  • Owns interface integrity and master-data quality across upstream and downstream HR, Finance, Tax, and Treasury dependencies - the most common source of payroll defects
  • Provides leadership and high-level direction to teams across multiple platforms, divisions, and lines of business (engineering, product, platform, and production support), while partnering with Payroll Operations and regional stakeholders to translate operational needs into prioritized technical roadmaps and delivery plans
  • Drives compliance-by-design, ensuring platform and integration capabilities support financial controls (SOX), country-specific statutory and tax reporting, data residency and retention requirements, segregation of duties, and access management
  • Balances disciplined BAU delivery (SDLC, automated testing, monitoring and observability, incident and problem management, peak-cycle readiness) with innovation that optimizes process, automates controls, improves data quality, and modernizes integrations at global scale
  • Leads vendor and partner governance (including ADP) for technology delivery performance, roadmap alignment, and managed-service outcomes
  • Sets and scales multi-department strategy for agentic AI-enabled engineering and SDLC/TLM automation (using enterprise-authorized tools within the work environment) to drive firmwide objectives (speed, scalability, reliability, and cost-to-serve), including portfolio-level standards for AI-orchestrated delivery workflows, release governance, automated test modernization, resilience engineering, and incident response acceleration; establishes guardrails for validation, security, resiliency, traceability, and reuse.
  • Applies knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to drive cross-domain reuse and measurable capacity unlock outcomes across departments.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 10+ years applied experience. In addition, 5+ years of experience leading technologists to manage, anticipate and solve complex technical items within your domain of expertise Deep experience delivering payroll technology (platforms and integrations, not payroll operations) in a large, highly regulated, global enterprise spanning U.S. and multi-country payroll
  • Strong expertise with Oracle HCM Payroll and Time from a platform and integration perspective (implementation and upgrade enablement, interfaces, production stability, and controls)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting payroll ecosystems involving ADP GlobalView and/or ADP Celergo, including integration governance and managed-vendor partnership models
  • Proven ability to operate mission-critical, deadline-driven platforms with rigorous controls: audit readiness, change control, segregation of duties, access management, resiliency, and incident and problem management
  • Experience developing or leading large or cross-functional teams of technologists
  • Demonstrated prior experience influencing across highly matrixed, complex organizations and delivering value at scale
  • Experience leading complex projects supporting system design, testing, and operational stability, including upstream and downstream HR, Finance, and data dependencies
  • Executive-level communication: ability to communicate clearly, present to senior leaders, and drive decisions across competing priorities
  • Practical experience with cloud and SaaS integration architecture
  • Experience leading multi-organization adoption of agentic AI-enabled engineering operating models (using enterprise-authorized tools within the work environment), including defining governance (human-in-the-loop decisioning, quality gates), measurement frameworks, and secure handling of sensitive inputs/outputs across teams.
  • Deep understanding of responsible AI risk, controls, and resiliency/security expectations at scale, with demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders on safe adoption, portfolio governance, and reuse-first strategies.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience working at code level
  • Experience modernizing enterprise integrations (API-led and event-driven patterns, secure file transfer modernization, interface test automation, observability and monitoring)
  • Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar - where approved) applied to delivery acceleration while maintaining strong controls and SDLC discipline
  • Experience partnering with Operations teams in a technology enablement model (clear RACI, operational readiness, SLAs/SLOs, and issue management)
  • Experience leading globally distributed teams and support models
