How much do cosmochemistry jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for cosmochemistry in the United States is $26.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $30.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of samples and data does a cosmochemist typically work with?

Cosmochemists frequently analyze samples such as meteorites, lunar rocks, and cosmic dust, as well as data from remote sensing instruments on space missions. Their work involves preparing and studying these materials in specialized laboratories to determine their chemical and isotopic compositions. This often requires close collaboration with planetary geologists, physicists, and engineers. The ability to handle rare and sometimes tiny or delicate specimens, interpret complex datasets, and contribute insights to interdisciplinary research teams is a core part of the daily workflow in cosmochemistry.

What is a Cosmochemistry job?

A cosmochemistry job involves studying the chemical composition and origin of substances found in space, such as meteorites, comets, and planetary materials. Cosmochemists analyze isotopic and elemental data to understand the formation and evolution of the solar system. They often work in research institutions, universities, or space agencies using laboratory techniques and spacecraft data. Their work helps answer fundamental questions about planetary formation, early solar system processes, and even the origins of life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cosmochemistry position, and why are they important?

To thrive in cosmochemistry, you need a strong background in geology, chemistry, and planetary science, typically supported by a relevant advanced degree. Proficiency with laboratory analytical instruments such as mass spectrometers, electron microscopes, and software for data interpretation is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across scientific disciplines are valuable soft skills. These competencies are crucial for successfully analyzing extraterrestrial materials and contributing to our understanding of the solar system's formation.

  • Responsible for monitoring and updating calibration analysis on a weekly basis and diagnosing anomalies
  • Works with electronics, power supplies, mechanical systems, and if needed, control software, to Study Test Systems. A unique laboratory has been set up with a slice of the operational detector. This system is used to track stability, understand anomalies, and test new software and hardware techniques
  • Works with the maintenance team to repair any readout channels with faulty behavior on the ATLAS detector when it is taken off-line
  • Has limited authority on construction, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and development of new, modified, and existing systems and of electric or electronic components, equipment, systems, etc
  • Analyzes equipment to establish operating data and conduct experimental tests
  • Performs development activities, including drawing board layout and interpretation and implementation of project specifications and documentation requirements.
