They are responsible for assessing, treating, and managing the medical needs of inmates, including administering medications, responding to emergencies, and promoting health education. Correctional RNs work closely with security staff to ensure both patient care and safety within the facility. This role requires strong clinical skills, adaptability, and the ability to work in a unique and sometimes challenging environment.

What are some common challenges correctional RNs face when providing care to incarcerated patients?

Correctional RNs often encounter unique challenges, such as balancing patient advocacy with strict security protocols and limited resources. They may care for individuals with complex medical and mental health needs while navigating safety concerns and maintaining professional boundaries. Adapting to these dynamics is key to success and personal growth in this role.
