Job description

Department: Core Lab

Schedule: Fulltime - Days, 8am-4:30pm

Facility: Saint Francis Hospital

Location: Evanston, IL


The Microbiology and Molecular Manager provides administrative, operational, and technical leadership for Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics services within the Core Laboratory, including oversight and optimization of existing microbiology automation platforms such as WASPLab and digital microbiology systems.

This individual: 1) is responsible for overseeing daily operations including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and molecular diagnostics (PCR/NAAT) 2) ensures efficient laboratory workflow, high-quality test performance, regulatory compliance, and optimal utilization of total laboratory automation (TLA) 3) responsible for maximizing the performance and value of automation systems to support centralized testing across multiple hospital sites 4) collaborates closely with the Core Laboratory Medical Director, Infectious Disease physicians, Infection Prevention, Pharmacy, and hospital leadership to support clinical decision-making, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection control initiatives.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

1. Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, molecular biology, or related field required.
2. ASCP certification (MLS or equivalent) preferred.
3. Minimum five (5) years of microbiology and/or molecular laboratory experience required.
4. Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
5. Experience with microbiology automation platforms (e.g., WASPLab or equivalent) strongly preferred.
6. Preferably, has a strong knowledge of:
Microbiology culture techniques and organism identification
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
Molecular diagnostics (PCR, NAAT)
Laboratory automation and digital microbiology

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $85,716.80 to $115,377.60 on an annualized basis. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
