Position Summary
The Outreach Coordinator for the University of New Mexico (UNM) Veterans & Military Resource Center (VMRC) plays a vital role in supporting and promoting the educational, social, and professional success of student veterans, military-connected individuals, and their families.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement outreach programs and initiatives designed to connect with military-affiliated students.
  • Ensure students have access to the available UNM resources and services.
  • Serve as a liaison between the VMRC, prospective students, military organizations, community partners, and university departments.
  • Foster and promote teamwork with students and departments.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive environment for military-affiliated individuals within the University of New Mexico.
  • Serve as a resource for students seeking guidance on navigating military benefits, including GI Bill, vocational rehabilitation, and other support services.
  • Provide and execute the coordination and support of various public relations, membership, underwriting, and/or related outreach and/or promotional activities of a discreet operating entity of the University.
  • Provide departmental marketing and administrative assistance.
  • Provide knowledge and skills training assistance to volunteers, as needed & appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid NM Driver's License may be a requirement for some positions in this classification.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Outreach and Community Engagement.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with military veterans, active-duty service members, and their families.
  • Experience in planning, promoting, and executing community outreach events, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
  • Prior experience working with military veterans, military families, or in higher education.
  • Military service experience or a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by veterans transitioning to academic life.
  • Familiarity with UNM's campus services, policies, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with UNM's Banner 9, MYUNM, VA Enrollment Manager, and the PAVE system.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, especially in veteran support services or student affairs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft clear and engaging messaging.
  • Ability to speak confidently and empathetically with diverse veteran populations and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Military Culture and Veteran Needs
  • Understanding of the unique challenges and experiences of military service members, veterans, and their families.
  • Familiarity with veteran benefits, military transitions, and programs aimed at supporting veterans in higher education and career development.

Event Planning and Coordination:
  • Experience organizing and coordinating events, including scheduling, budgeting, logistics, and participant engagement.
  • Ability to collaborate with campus departments, veteran organizations, and community partners to deliver impactful events.

Marketing and Social Media Proficiency:
  • Experience using social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to raise awareness and engage with the veteran community.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing strategies to create compelling campaigns targeting veteran populations.
