Job Description:
The Controls Engineering Intern will support the Controls Engineering team with SCADA system upgrades, including the development and refinement of dashboards for specialists, supervisors, and line leadership supporting Lines 1 and 2. The role provides hands-on exposure to implementing SCADA enhancements in a live manufacturing environment, using formal change-management processes and collaborating with production stakeholders.
  • Assist the Controls Engineering team with SCADA enhancement projects for Lines 1 and 2 at the Spokane facility.
  • Develop and update SCADA dashboards (Wonderware/Aveva) for end users (specialists, supervisors, and line leadership).
  • Participate in troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for automation and equipment functionality issues.
  • Support implementation activities under the site change-management process (documentation, testing, deployment, and verification).
  • Communicate progress and incorporate stakeholder feedback to deliver usable, maintainable SCADA improvements.

This internship consists of 10-14 weeks of structured hands-on training involving site equipment, JHS team networking, and projects selected to add direct value to the business. At the conclusion of the program, each intern will present their projects to the site Engineering directors, managers, and mentors, among others. An internship at Jubilant HollisterStier will provide an invaluable experience that can be utilized in any role, and it's the goal at JHS to evaluate our interns for potential entry-level openings.
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program (Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related).
  • Strong interest in manufacturing and industrial automation.
  • Coursework or project experience in robotics, automation, PLCs, or industrial control systems is preferred.
  • Preferred familiarity with Rockwell or Siemens logic controllers (coursework or lab experience acceptable).
  • Typically 3rd year of an engineering program (or equivalent experience); electrical coursework completed.
  • Interest in PLC ladder logic and/or structured text
  • Programming exposure in one or more languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, or other controls-related languages).
  • Enjoys troubleshooting and working collaboratively with cross-functional teams (production, maintenance, engineering).

LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • Develop, modify, and deploy SCADA dashboards in Wonderware/Aveva aligned to stakeholder requirements.
  • Apply the site change-management process to plan, document, test, and implement SCADA changes.
  • Demonstrate improved troubleshooting, verification, and documentation practices for automation enhancements.
  • Strengthen communication and stakeholder-management skills by gathering requirements and incorporating feedback.
