MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Mechanical Technician performs senior-level maintenance and repair work under general supervision, serving as a technical consultant to ensure equipment and systems operate safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include diagnosing and repairing equipment, conducting safety testing, maintaining inventory and records, and completing related duties. The position may require working day, swing, or graveyard shifts as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
When assigned to Facilities Maintenance:
Operations, Maintenance & Equipment Repair
- Inspect boilers and HVAC systems to ensure proper operation and maintenance procedures.
- Perform complex maintenance, updates, remodeling, and mechanical repairs on boilers, HVAC systems, and related equipment.
- Repair and adjust electrical and pneumatic pressure control equipment; test and maintain safety switches and controls.
- Repair refractories and fireboxes, including cleaning fireside and waterside of boilers.
- Test and treat hot water, chilled water, steam, and other hydronic systems.
- Maintain and repair ground source heat pump systems.
Technical Oversight, Project Management & Compliance
- Provide technical guidance and preventative maintenance training to staff
- Coordinate and oversee preparation of boilers and vessels for annual inspection and certification
- Ensure compliance with State, local, District, and regulatory agency requirements
- Manage large HVAC maintenance projects
- Assist with energy analysis studies
- Identify and prioritize equipment repair and replacement needs
- Review plans for new schools and major projects; assist in developing construction standards
Documentation, Inventory & Regulatory Remediation
- Estimate time and material costs for vendor and contractor repairs.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of testing, preventative maintenance, and major repairs.
- Manage inventory of supplies, equipment, and parts.
- Complete material disturbance permits in compliance with policy.
- Perform AHERA Class III asbestos disturbances as required.
- Perform OSHA-compliant lead remediation as required.
- Perform mold remediation in accordance with regulations.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
When Assigned to Nutrition Services:
Operations, Maintenance & Equipment Repair
- Inspect commercial kitchen equipment and refrigeration systems for proper operation.
- Perform complex maintenance, remodeling, and mechanical repairs on refrigeration racks, dishwashers, and related kitchen equipment.
- Repair and adjust refrigeration and heating set points.
- Test and maintain safety switches and controls.
- Delime dishwashers.
- Clean and sanitize ice machines.
- Clean condenser coils on refrigeration equipment.
- Service and rebuild wrapping machines.
Technical Oversight, Project Management & Compliance
- Provide technical guidance and preventative maintenance training to Custodians, Maintenance Technicians, and Kitchen Managers.
- Coordinate and oversee servicing of refrigeration racks, dishwashers, and ice machines.
- Ensure compliance with State, local, District, and Health Department policies.
- Manage large kitchen maintenance projects.
- Assist with energy analysis studies.
- Identify and prioritize equipment repair and replacement needs.
- Review plans for new schools and major projects and assist in developing construction standards

QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of a recognized HVAC apprenticeship program or graduation from an accredited trade or technical school with major course work in boiler and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems required.
OR
Experience: Five (5) years of varied journey level experience with boilers and heating,
ventilating and air conditioning systems required. Three (3) years experience working under the
supervision of a licensed contractor performing varied and complex boiler, heating, ventilating
and air conditioning installation, maintenance and repair activities preferred.
Licenses/Certificates:
- Possession of a valid Nevada Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the District; must maintain a valid driver License.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certification; Universal Certification will be required within the probation period.
- AHERA 16 Hour asbestos training, asbestos certification required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.
- OSHA Lead Action 8 hour Training. Certification required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.
COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES
Knowledge of:
- Advanced journey-level techniques, procedures, and tools used in the mechanical maintenance and repair of boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, refrigeration units, cooking and food service equipment, pumps, motors, and related mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic control systems.
- Applicable state and local codes and regulations governing maintenance and repair activities.
- Workplace hazards and required safety precautions associated with mechanical, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.
- Basic computer operations necessary to utilize energy management and computerized work order systems.
Skill in:
- Diagnosing, repairing, installing, and maintaining complex mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration and commercial equipment systems at an advanced journey level.
- Reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings, blueprints, technical manuals, and specification sheets.
- Applying proper safety practices in maintenance and repair activities.
- Estimating material and labor costs.
- Preparing and maintaining operational records and reports.
- Effectively using computerized work order systems.
- Performing heavy manual labor.
Ability to:
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Function as an in-house technical advisor and trainer.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, regulatory agencies, and others encountered in the course of work.
