Data Engineering Apprenticeship information

What is a Data Engineering Apprenticeship job?

A Data Engineering Apprenticeship is a training program that combines hands-on work experience with structured learning to develop skills in data engineering. Apprentices typically assist with tasks like data pipeline development, database management, and data processing while being mentored by experienced professionals. The goal is to gain practical experience with tools such as SQL, Python, and cloud platforms while building a strong foundation in data engineering principles. These programs are ideal for individuals looking to start a career in data engineering without prior professional experience.

What kinds of projects and tasks will I typically work on during a Data Engineering Apprenticeship?

As a Data Engineering Apprentice, you can expect to assist with building and maintaining data pipelines, cleaning and transforming raw data, and supporting the integration of data from multiple sources. Apprentices often work under the guidance of senior data engineers on real-world projects, such as optimizing query performance or automating data workflows. You may also participate in team meetings, help with documentation, and contribute to ongoing process improvements. This hands-on experience helps you build practical technical skills while understanding how data engineering fits within larger business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Engineering Apprenticeship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineering Apprentice, you need a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, data analysis, and basic programming skills, often supported by relevant coursework or a related degree. Familiarity with SQL, Python, data modeling tools, and cloud data platforms like AWS or Azure is commonly expected, while certifications in data analytics or cloud services can be a bonus. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with technical teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively manage, optimize, and deliver reliable data solutions in a fast-evolving technical environment.

Job description

SUMMARY: The Senior Project Manager, Data Centers leads complex electrical construction projects in data center and mission-critical environments after project handoff, from mobilization and execution through commissioning support, turnover, and closeout. This role owns project delivery, financial performance, client relationships, safety, quality, scheduling, procurement, change management, commissioning readiness, and team development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead assigned data center and mission-critical electrical construction projects after project handoff, from mobilization and execution through commissioning support, turnover, and closeout.
  • Manage a portfolio of concurrent data center projects or one or more large, complex hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, cloud, AI, or mission-critical electrical construction projects.
  • Partner with project executives, field leadership, superintendents, foremen, preconstruction, estimating, procurement, virtual construction, engineering, quality, safety, commissioning, and project support teams to plan and deliver work effectively.
  • Own project delivery and manage financial performance, balancing scope, resources, schedules, cost control, forecasts, schedules of values, progress billings, cash flow, NOI, and profitability.
  • Prepare and review monthly job projections, WIP updates, project controls reports, and financial forecasts; communicate performance, risks, efficiency opportunities, and recovery plans clearly.
  • Identify, prepare, price, submit, negotiate, and manage change orders while maintaining appropriate documentation, proactively managing expectations, and communicating client value.
  • Develop, track, and maintain detailed project schedules; adjust priorities and milestones based on changing client needs, phased turnover requirements, commissioning activities, resource availability, jobsite conditions, and project requirements.
  • Review contracts and coordinate revisions, changes, notices, RFIs, submittals, purchase orders, subcontractor scopes, vendor commitments, and project correspondence.
  • Lead project pre-planning efforts, including turnover meetings, labor task code setup, manpower planning, safety planning, logistics, material planning, prefabrication strategy, site coordination, and integration with field operations.
  • Coordinate procurement, material submittals, equipment needs, long-lead items, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, RPPs, distribution equipment, controls, and other critical-path electrical infrastructure to support schedule, field productivity, and turnover milestones.
  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing project teams, including Project Engineers, Assistant Project Managers, Project Managers, coordinators, and support staff, while reinforcing Baker standards.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with clients, general contractors, owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, commissioning agents, subcontractors, vendors, operations teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Regularly visit projects and coordinate with foremen, superintendents, and field leadership to assess progress, quality, productivity, safety, installation sequencing, coordination constraints, and client satisfaction.
  • Proactively identify complex project challenges, risks, delays, productivity issues, and changing conditions; apply sound judgment, implement corrective measures, and escalate significant concerns as appropriate.
  • Manage project closeout and turnover, including punch list completion, final change orders, record drawings, manuals, warranties, commissioning support, systems documentation, client turnover packages, lessons learned, and team debriefs.
  • Evaluate construction methods, project execution approaches, prefabrication opportunities, resource plans, and sequencing strategies to improve technical quality, cost effectiveness, efficiency, quality, safety, predictability, and NOI.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • 7+ years of electrical construction project management experience with an electrical contractor; 10+ years preferred, with demonstrated experience in data center, mission-critical, commercial, industrial, or large-scale technical environments.
  • Demonstrated success managing large, complex electrical construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical construction materials, methods, tools, contract documents, plans, specifications, scheduling, project controls, field coordination, quality requirements, and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Proven experience with budgets, cost reports, forecasting, schedules of values, billings, labor tracking, procurement, subcontractor coordination, and change order management.
  • Field experience, electrical trade background, journeyman/master electrician license, or completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent electrical construction experience may be considered.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office/O365 and Procore, estimating, scheduling, and document control.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with strong organization, judgment, negotiation, communication, analytical, leadership, and client relationship skills.

DATA CENTER EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Experience managing electrical scopes in hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, cloud, AI, or mission-critical data center environments.
  • Familiarity with critical power infrastructure, including switchgear, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, RPPs, distribution equipment, controls, and phased turnover requirements.
  • Working knowledge of commissioning support, system turnover, client standards, uptime expectations, redundancy, and operational reliability requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively in schedule-driven environments with owners, general contractors, commissioning agents, engineering teams, vendors, and field leadership.
