What is a controlling manager?

Controlling Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing a company's financial planning, monitoring, and reporting processes. They ensure that the organization's financial resources are used efficiently and effectively to achieve its goals. Their duties typically include budgeting, financial analysis, cost control, and providing management with insights for decision-making. Controlling Managers often work closely with other departments to gather data and help guide strategic planning. They play a key role in maintaining financial transparency and compliance within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controlling manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controlling Manager, you need strong analytical abilities, financial expertise, and a background in accounting or finance, often supported by a relevant degree or certification (such as CPA or CMA). Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP, advanced Excel skills, and financial reporting tools are typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you effectively collaborate across departments and drive business strategy. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, informed decision-making, and alignment of financial goals with organizational objectives.

How does a controlling manager typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Controlling Manager works closely with various departments such as finance, operations, and executive leadership to ensure alignment on budgets, forecasts, and financial strategies. Regular meetings and cross-functional projects are common, where the Controlling Manager provides analytical support and financial insights to guide decision-making. This collaborative approach helps identify cost-saving opportunities and ensures organizational goals are met while maintaining compliance with internal policies. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role often involves translating complex financial data for non-financial stakeholders.

Job description

Location: Riverside, CA (On-site)

Compensation: $110,000-$120,000 base, plus a 10% annual performance bonus (~$13,000), comprehensive corporate healthcare package, PTO, and 401(k) match

Employment: Full-time, permanent (direct hire)

An established, rapidly growing food manufacturing company is hiring an Assistant Controller to lead day-to-day operational accounting and plant cost-control systems. This is a senior-level lieutenant role working directly alongside the Plant Controller: managing a local team, maintaining technical GAAP integrity, and transforming production floor data into actionable financial insights to drive business performance.

What You'll Own

- Supervise, mentor, and review the performance of a 5-person operational accounting team across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger (2 professional, 3 clerical reports)

- Own the execution of monthly and year-end close processes, including journal entries, robust account reconciliations, and the preparation of monthly financial statements in compliance with GAAP

- Manage all plant-floor cost accounting activities, including standard costing configurations, inventory variance analysis (material, labor, scrap, yield loss), and complex overhead allocations

- Oversee multi-location inventory performance, monitoring physical cycle counts, tracking transactions, and executing tracking metrics to maximize inventory precision

- Act as the internal finance power-user for the NetSuite ERP platform to optimize daily financial operations and financial reporting workflows

- Partner cross-functionally with manufacturing, supply chain, and operations teams to monitor cost drivers and support operational efficiency

- Assist with annual external audits, board reporting preparation, executive presentations, and regulatory compliance

What You'll Bring

- 10 or more years of progressive corporate accounting experience, with clear continuity within a physical manufacturing environment

- Strong, proven proficiency utilizing NetSuite ERP within an industrial or plant setting

- Solid hands-on background in cost accounting, standard costing, and inventory valuation systems

- Experience with financial forecasting, budgeting, and driver-based financial modeling

- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (including Macros, Pivot Tables, and lookups)

- Clear experience directly supervising line staff or an accounting sub-team

Nice to Have

- Food or beverage manufacturing background (perishable goods experience)

- Active professional certifications (CPA or CMA)

If you are a hands-on accounting professional who can lead a local team, navigate NetSuite seamlessly, and partner with plant operations to protect product margins, this is a high-ownership seat with real bonus upside.
