What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Supervisor - Central Gas Control

UGI Corporation

Wyomissing, PA • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Posted 7 days ago

Job description

Requisition Number: 30229
A subsidiary of UGI Corporation, UGI Energy Services supplies and markets natural gas, liquid fuels, renewable natural gas, and electricity to 42,000 customer locations across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US. We are a supplier, marketer, and midstream services provider - one backed by 135 years of natural gas experience, plus our own expanding energy infrastructure. Along with buying and selling energy commodities at the wholesale level, UGIES owns and operates key midstream natural gas assets.
We offer comprehensive benefits, some of which are:
  • Paid Vacation time starts with 3 weeks off
  • 9 Paid Holidays
  • Medical plan, prescription, dental, vision, life insurance
  • Paid parental and volunteer time
  • 401(k) matched savings plan
  • Tuition Reimbursement

Central Gas Control is seeking an experienced, people-first leader to supervise the team of Gas Controllers responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the UGI Utilities and UGI Energy Services natural gas systems. Operating on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis, our control room monitors and controls key facilities through SCADA, responds to system alarms, and executes daily and seasonal supply plans. The Supervisor leads and develops the controller team, keeps the control room compliant and audit-ready, and drives continuous improvement in how we monitor systems and respond to changing conditions. We are looking for someone who leads by coaching, is curious about better ways of working, and is comfortable experimenting, measuring results, and learning alongside the team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Leadership and Supervision
  • Lead and supervise the Gas Controller team across all shifts, providing daily direction, shift coverage, and clear turnover discipline.
  • Hold controllers accountable for performance and ensure consistent, standardized cause-and-effect response to system conditions and alarms across every shift.
  • Serve as the on-site control-room lead during peak-demand events and abnormal operating conditions, directing coordinated response across the controller team, Supply, Midstream, and interstate pipeline partners.
  • Foster a collaborative control-room culture where controllers are supported, developed, and encouraged to raise ideas and concerns.

Training and Development
  • Own the controller training pipeline, guiding trainees through the structured Operator Qualification (OQ) curriculum to full qualification.
  • Maintain the OQ and fatigue-management programs and keep training materials current as systems and procedures evolve.
  • Coach controllers as an ongoing process of practice, feedback, and improvement - building skill and confidence over time rather than treating qualification as a one-time event.

Continuous Improvement and Reliability
  • Drive continuous improvement of control-room processes to strengthen operational efficiency and system reliability.
  • Identify opportunities, test changes in a controlled and safe manner, measure the results, and adopt better methods - for example in alarm response, operating procedures, logging, and monitoring workflows.
  • Use operational data and internally built tools to track performance and surface where the control room can improve.

Regulatory Compliance
  • Maintain full adherence to PHMSA Control Room Management (CRM) requirements in daily operations.
  • Keep alarm, emergency, and operating procedures current, and enforce documented protocols across the team.
  • Serve as the control-room point of accountability for PA PUC, FERC, and PHMSA audits and reviews.

Cross-Functional Representation
  • Represent Central Gas Control in cross-departmental meetings and projects.
  • Act as the control room's point of contact for Engineering, Measurement & Regulation, Telemetry, Supply, IT/SCADA, and interstate pipeline partners.
  • Lead or represent CGC on initiatives that affect control-room operations, tools, and staffing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Leadership and People Development
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and hold a team accountable across multiple shifts.
  • A continuous-improvement mindset - comfort identifying problems, testing changes, learning from results, and adopting better methods rather than defaulting to "how it's always been done."
  • Willingness to learn from the team and from other departments, seeking diverse perspectives and improving through feedback.

Technical and Operational Competencies
  • Operational fluency with SCADA monitoring and control, alarm management, and emergency / abnormal-operating-condition response.
  • Working knowledge of UGI and UGIES gas systems, interstate pipeline interconnects, and the daily and seasonal supply plans the control room operates against.
  • Understanding of gas measurement, regulation, and pipeline tariff and nomination concepts sufficient to supervise controller decisions.
  • Comfort with data and modern tools - reading operational data, using analytics and internally built applications, and openness to learning new tools as the control room's toolset evolves.

Regulatory Knowledge
  • Knowledge of PHMSA Control Room Management regulations and the practical work of staying audit-ready (49 CFR 192 / 195, PA PUC Chapter 59).
  • Understanding of FERC Standards of Conduct as they apply to a FERC-sensitive role.

Communication and Judgment
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to represent the control room clearly to internal groups and external pipeline partners.
  • Sound judgment under pressure and the ability to make safe, timely decisions during system events, including acting as the control-room lead during peak-demand and abnormal operating conditions.

Operational Requirements
  • Ability to support a 24 x 7 x 365 operation, including availability off-hours and on call for operational and control-room issues.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations and respond effectively under pressure.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma / GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical, engineering, or business discipline preferred. Equivalent gas-control operating experience may be substituted for formal education.
  • Minimum 5 years of natural gas operations or gas control experience required; experience as a fully qualified Gas Controller strongly preferred.
  • Prior lead, shift-lead, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.) and the ability to navigate internet-based systems and electronic bulletin boards.

Professional Development
  • This position leads the controller team that keeps our gas systems running safely every day, and offers a clear path into broader operations and control-room leadership within Central Gas Control.
