A controller is often a stepping stone to becoming a CFO, as both roles involve financial management and strategic planning. Controllers typically develop leadership skills and financial expertise that are valuable for CFO positions, which usually require experience in financial reporting, analysis, and team management. However, career paths vary, and additional experience or certifications like CPA or MBA may be necessary to advance to CFO.

Is a controller or CFO higher?

A Controller is responsible for overseeing accounting and financial reporting, while a CFO (Chief Financial Officer) holds a higher executive position that involves strategic financial planning, decision-making, and overall financial leadership. Typically, the CFO is part of the executive leadership team and has broader responsibilities than a Controller.

What is the salary of a controller vs. CFO?

A controller typically earns between $70,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on company size and location, while a CFO's salary ranges from $130,000 to over $300,000, often including bonuses and stock options.
