Most accountants and controllers earn significantly less, with salaries varying based on industry, location, and company size.

What does a controller do in accounting?

Who is higher, CFO or controller?

In accounting, the Controller is responsible for overseeing internal accounting operations, while the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) holds a higher executive position overseeing the company's overall financial strategy, including accounting, finance, and risk management. The CFO typically reports to the CEO and has broader responsibilities than the Controller.

What are Controllers in Accounting?

Job description

PRIDESTAFF is seeking a hands-on Accounting Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations across a growing portfolio of hospitality, restaurant, and commercial real estate assets. This role is critical to maintaining accurate financials, strong internal controls, and timely reporting in a high-transaction, multi-entity environment.

The Controller will partner closely with the CFO and ownership to ensure clean monthly closes, disciplined cash management, and scalable accounting processes as the business continues to grow.

This is not a “hands-off” role—the ideal candidate is comfortable both setting policy and getting into the weeds.

Responsibilities are but are not limited to:

Financial Close & Reporting

  • Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across multiple legal entities
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, merchant processors, and clearing accounts
  • Review journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, and intercompany transactions
  • Prepare and review consolidated financials for ownership and lenders

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee AP, AR, payroll coordination, and cash disbursements
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition across restaurants, hotels, STRs, and leases
  • Maintain rolling debt schedules that are updated monthly and serve as a quick reference guide
  • Monitor and enforce internal controls and accounting policies
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with the CFO

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Act as the internal owner of accounting software, Restaurant365, and understand all related accounting and POS systems
  • Improve workflows around bank feeds, reconciliations, and entity roll-ups
  • Build scalable processes for new properties, entities, and bank accounts
  • Coordinate integrations with PMS systems, POS systems, and payment platforms across all business segments

Tax, Insurance Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate with external CPAs on tax filings, and insurance auditors for annual insurance audits
  • Ensure compliance with sales tax, occupancy tax, payroll tax, and entity filings
  • Support lender reporting (SBA, bank covenants, monthly reporting packages)
  • Maintain organized documentation for audits, SBA reviews, and due diligence

Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff
  • Interface with on-site operations managers regarding any accounting related items and assistance troubleshooting accounting system issues
  • Set expectations, deadlines, and quality standards
  • Review work product and provide constructive feedback

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of accounting experience or 2+ years in a Controller or Accounting Manager role preferred
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting and high transaction volumes
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls
  • Proven ability to manage month-end close independently
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations)

Preferred Experience

  • Hospitality, restaurant, hotel, or real estate accounting background
  • Restaurant365 experience preferred but not required
  • Hands on experience in role
  • Experience working in a lean accounting team with ownership visibility

What Success Looks Like (Initial 12 months)

  • Month-end close consistently completed on time and without surprises
  • Clean, well-supported balance sheets across all entities
  • Improved visibility into cash, intercompany activity, and operating results
  • Reduced CFO involvement in day-to-day accounting fire drills
  • Accounting processes that scale as new properties and entities are added
