What You Will Be Doing:

The Plant Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial activities for the manufacturing division within a multi-division organization. This role serves as the primary financial partner to plant management, providing accurate financial reporting, cost analysis, and operational insights to support effective decision-making. The Plant Controller ensures strong financial controls, leads plant-level accounting staff, and maintains a deep understanding of production and operational processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting:

    • Oversee all accounting functions for the manufacturing division, including general ledger, month-end close, and financial reporting.
    • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for plant operations.
    • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards.
    • Support internal and external audits related to plant operations.

Cost Accounting & Analysis:

    • Maintain and enhance standard cost systems, including bills of materials, routings, labor, and overhead rates.
    • Analyze manufacturing variances (material, labor, overhead) and communicate root causes and corrective actions to operations leadership.
    • Monitor inventory valuation, including raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods.
    • Support pricing, margin analysis, and make-versus-buy decisions.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

    • Lead the annual budget and periodic forecast processes for the manufacturing division.
    • Partner with operations and plant leadership to develop realistic production, cost, and capital expenditure plans.
    • Track performance against budget and forecast, providing clear explanations for variances.

Operational Partnership:

    • Develop a strong understanding of production processes, capacity, throughput, scrap, and efficiency metrics.
    • Act as a financial business partner to plant management, providing actionable insights to improve profitability, cost control, and operational performance.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives, lean manufacturing efforts, and productivity projects with financial analysis.

Leadership & Team Management

    • Manage and develop one to two plant accountants or cost accountants.
    • Ensure timely and accurate completion of accounting tasks by the plant accounting team.
    • Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance function.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participate in required safety program, and work in a safe manner.
  • Additional duties as assigned by manager.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including cost accounting in a manufacturing or similar industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with inventory costing, cost accounting, and manufacturing variance analysis.
  • Prior experience managing or mentoring accounting staff.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing operations and production processes.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
