Controller Government Contracting information

What is a controller government contracting?

Controller Government Contracting jobs involve overseeing the financial operations and compliance of organizations that do business with government agencies. These professionals ensure that all accounting, reporting, and financial management practices adhere to federal regulations and contract requirements. Their responsibilities include budgeting, cost analysis, audits, and maintaining internal controls specific to government contracts. Controllers in this field must stay updated on changes in government regulations and work closely with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller in government contracting?

To excel as a Controller in Government Contracting, you need expertise in accounting principles, government contract compliance (such as FAR/DFARS), and financial analysis, typically supported by a CPA or equivalent degree. Familiarity with ERP systems, DCAA audit requirements, and cost accounting software is often required. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication help manage teams and ensure regulatory adherence. These skills are crucial for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring contract compliance, and supporting organizational success in a highly regulated environment.

What is the difference between Controller Government Contracting vs Controller Government Contracting?

AspectController Government Contracting

It appears the comparison is between the same roles, which may be a typo. Assuming the intended comparison is with a Controller in a different industry, such as Corporate Controller, the main differences are in work environment, certifications, and industry focus. Controller Government Contracting specializes in managing financials for government projects, often requiring knowledge of federal regulations, whereas a Corporate Controller handles overall financial management in private sector companies. Both roles require CPA certification and strong accounting skills but differ in industry-specific knowledge and compliance requirements.

What are some common challenges a controller faces when working with government contracts, and how can they be addressed?

Controllers in government contracting often encounter challenges such as ensuring compliance with complex federal regulations (like FAR/DFARS), managing rigorous audit requirements, and maintaining accurate cost tracking for multiple contracts. To address these, Controllers typically implement robust internal controls, stay up-to-date on regulatory changes through ongoing training, and work closely with both project managers and compliance teams. Proactive communication and investment in specialized accounting software tailored to government contracts can also help streamline reporting and minimize errors.

Are you passionate about making the world better? Are you looking for an organization that aligns with your values?
MRIGlobal solves challenging problems through science, engineering, and program management. We are an independent scientific research organization dedicated to benefiting society and fostering a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment.
When you embark on a career with MRIGlobal, you are joining a crew of world-class talent and problem solvers. Established in 1944, MRIGlobal is headquartered in Kansas City, MO, working in several states including Virginia and Maryland.
MRIGlobal is seeking an experienced Director Accounting-Controller to lead the organization's accounting and financial reporting functions and serve as a key financial leader within the organization.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, the Director Accounting-Controller oversees the Accounting Department and provides the technical expertise, financial insight, and leadership necessary to support MRIGlobal's financial strength and stability.
This is an opportunity for a seasoned accounting leader who combines deep technical accounting knowledge with sound business judgment, a strategic perspective, and experience working in a government contracting or similarly regulated environment. The successful candidate will lead a significant accounting function, strengthen financial processes and controls, partner with leaders across the organization, and help ensure the integrity and reliability of MRIGlobal's financial information.
What You'll Lead
Financial Reporting, Government Accounting & Compliance
Lead the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and reporting requirements, with particular attention to the requirements and complexities associated with government contracting and federally funded work. Support internal and external auditors throughout the annual audit process.
Financial Analysis & Decision Support
Provide financial analysis, insight, and recommendations that help senior leadership make informed business decisions. Apply a strong understanding of accounting and financial principles to evaluate performance, identify trends and risks, and support organizational financial objectives.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
Establish and maintain a strong system of internal controls that safeguards organizational assets and promotes compliance with policies and applicable regulatory requirements. Identify and mitigate financial risks through proactive risk management.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the budgeting and forecasting process in partnership with department leaders. Develop accurate and realistic financial plans, monitor budget performance, and provide meaningful variance analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
Accounting Leadership & Talent Development
Lead and develop a high-performing Accounting team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth. Build departmental capabilities through effective systems, processes, and talent development, while maintaining strong relationships with internal partners and suppliers. The position manages five direct reports and 14 indirect staff.
Process Improvement
Evaluate and continuously improve accounting and financial processes to streamline workflows, increase efficiency, and strengthen the effectiveness of financial systems and tools. Identify opportunities to improve processes while maintaining appropriate accounting controls and compliance requirements.
Cash Management & Tax Compliance
Manage cash flow and liquidity to ensure the organization can meet its financial obligations. Implement effective treasury management practices and work with tax advisors to develop tax strategies and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
What You'll Bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and 15 years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior accounting, controller, or financial management role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with government contractor accounting, including FAR, CAS, Uniform Guidance, indirect cost rates, incurred cost submissions, and audit support.
  • Experience with Deltek Costpoint, financial reporting tools, and accounting system modernization initiatives.
  • CPA designation required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Why This Opportunity
This is a high-impact leadership role for an accounting professional who wants to contribute beyond the traditional Controller function. The Director Accounting-Controller will have the opportunity to influence financial processes and practices, develop a talented accounting organization, provide insight to senior leadership, and help position MRIGlobal for continued financial strength and stability.
The ideal candidate will bring a combination of technical accounting expertise, government contracting or regulated-environment experience, leadership capability, strategic thinking, and the ability to translate financial information into meaningful business insight.
Pay Range $157,000 - $196,000
The salary range is intended as a general guideline and is not a guaranteed offer, as compensation depends on various factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate qualifications, experience, internal equity, and market conditions.
