Description
Gain valuable insight into the role of an in-house legal department at one of America's leading transportation companies. As a Union Pacific Summer Law Clerk, you'll gain firsthand experience working alongside experienced in-house attorneys on matters involving transportation, intellectual property, commercial contracts, supply chain, regulatory affairs, litigation, employment law, and more. Throughout the program, Law Clerks receive mentoring, guidance, and developmental feedback to better understand the role of an in-house legal department at one of America's leading transportation companies.
Union Pacific Railroad Company's Law Department is seeking up to two Summer Law Clerks assigned to the Law Department in Omaha, Nebraska. During the summer, Law Clerks are required to work in Omaha, NE, 40 hours per week. Union Pacific is sourcing candidates nationwide, and summer relocation assistance and housing are provided for qualified students living more than 75 miles from Omaha. In addition to supporting a variety of legal practice areas, Summer Law Clerks may participate in elements of Union Pacific's broader summer internship program, including networking, professional development, educational events, and other intern activities.
Following the summer program, the position has the potential to transition to a year-round internship while the student remains enrolled in school. The academic-year schedule is flexible and can be designed around the successful candidate's academic commitments, with an average of 15-20 hours per week. Positions are available only while students are in school and do not guarantee full-time employment after the internship.
The estimated wage for this position is $31.00 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Accountabilities
  • Support attorneys with contractual drafting and review
  • Conduct legal research and prepare written legal analysis
  • Support attorneys by interpreting and applying statutes and regulations
  • Draft legal memoranda, briefs, pleadings, and other legal documents
  • Support attorneys with hearing and trial preparation
  • Review work product, discovery materials, and other documents to determine their relevance to legal issues and strategies
  • Assist attorneys with transactional, regulatory, litigation, employment, and other legal matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required
  • Current enrollment in an accredited law school during the internship period
  • Successful completion of at least one year of law school prior to the internship start date
  • Experience or coursework in Legal Research
  • Completion of coursework in Legal Writing
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Available to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer internship program

Qualifications - Preferred
  • Experience drafting legal memoranda, briefs, pleadings, or comparable written legal analyses through coursework, a legal clinic, research, a student organization, or employment
  • Coursework or experience involving contract drafting, contract review, commercial transactions, or transactional law
  • Experience interpreting and applying statutes or regulations to legal issues
  • Coursework or experience involving litigation, discovery, hearing preparation, or trial preparation
  • Experience reviewing documents or other information to determine relevance to a legal issue, investigation, dispute, or legal strategy

Physical and Mental Job Requirements
  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintain concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions

Work Conditions
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment
