Job description

The ATLAS group at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an intern to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The intern will work with graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff scientists on measurements of the Higgs boson, contributing to physics analysis of ATLAS Run 3 data at SLAC. This position is at the undergraduate level; prior research experience is not required, though coursework in physics and familiarity with programming are expected.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in Higgs boson measurement and search analyses under the guidance of senior group members, based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Conduct basic analysis tasks under supervision, including event selection, background estimation, and Monte Carlo simulation studies; maintain detailed records of procedures and outcomes.
  • Apply the theories and methods of a physical science discipline to interpret results, such as kinematic distributions, signal efficiencies, and systematic uncertainties.
  • Write and maintain analysis code in Python and C++ under guidance; contribute to validation and reproducibility of results.
  • Review documentation and literature on an ongoing basis to become familiar with the methods used in the analysis and apply learnings to related work.
  • Contribute to documentation of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including internal notes and presentations.
  • Attend group and collaboration meetings; present progress to the group at regular intervals.
