What is a contractor subcontractor?

Contractor subcontractors are individuals or companies hired by a general contractor to perform specific tasks or portions of work on a larger project. They typically specialize in areas such as electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, or painting, and are responsible for completing their assigned part according to the project’s specifications. Subcontractors operate under a contract with the main contractor rather than the project owner, and their work is usually coordinated and overseen by the general contractor. This arrangement allows the general contractor to leverage specialized skills and efficiently manage complex projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractor subcontractor?

To thrive as a Contractor Subcontractor, you need a solid understanding of construction processes, project management, and relevant trade skills, often supported by industry certifications or licenses. Familiarity with project management software, estimating tools, and compliance systems is typically required. Strong communication, reliability, and problem-solving skills help build trust with clients and general contractors. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to specification, which is vital for maintaining reputation and securing future work.

How do contractor subcontractors typically manage communication and coordination with general contractors on large projects?

Contractor Subcontractors frequently interact with general contractors through regular progress meetings, digital project management tools, and clear documentation to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Effective coordination is crucial for addressing changes in scope, scheduling, and resource allocation. Open lines of communication help prevent misunderstandings and delays, while proactive reporting of issues or conflicts is highly valued. Building strong professional relationships with general contractors can also lead to more consistent work opportunities and smoother project execution.

While a Contractor Subcontractor manages entire projects or specific trades, an Electrician specializes in electrical systems. Contractors subcontract electricians to handle electrical tasks, making their roles interconnected but distinct in scope and credentials.

How do contractor subcontractors get jobs?

Contractor subcontractors typically find jobs through bidding on projects posted by general contractors, networking within the industry, or through staffing agencies. They often need relevant licenses, insurance, and a strong reputation to secure contracts and may use online platforms or industry contacts to find opportunities.

What contractor subcontractors make the most money?

Among contractor subcontractors, those specializing in high-demand fields such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and specialized trade work tend to earn the highest incomes. Experience, certifications, and working in commercial or industrial projects can also significantly increase earning potential. Skilled subcontractors with a strong reputation and the ability to handle complex projects typically command higher rates.

Job description

Pointer Electric LLC

Electrician Subcontractor - 1099

Location: Gilbert, AZ, (On-Site)

Lead the Field. Set the Standard. Help Build Something That Matters.

Pointer Electric is a growing electrical contractor based in the Phoenix area, founded by owners with over 20 years of hands-on electrical experience and a deep commitment to quality, integrity, and community.

We're looking for a Lead Electrician who can step into the field with confidence, owning projects, mentoring apprentices, and delivering the kind of world-class service that sets us apart from typical electrical contractors.

This role is critical to our growth. You'll be the person who helps replace the owner in the field so the company can scale, while maintaining high standards, strong communication, and clean, professional job sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications independently
  • Interface directly with homeowners, clients, and general contractors
  • Mentor and guide apprentices; help develop the next generation of electricians
  • Ensure clean, safe, organized, and code-compliant job sites
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and solve problems efficiently
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, professionalism, and punctuality

Qualifications

  • 10 to 15 years of electrical experience preferred (5 or more is the minimum required)
  • Strong background in both residential and commercial work
  • Completed apprenticeship strongly preferred
  • Comfortable leading projects without needing hands-on training
  • Natural leadership qualities or prior leadership experience
  • High integrity, reliability, and pride in craftsmanship
  • Self-starter who is motivated by growth and ownership
  • Valid driver's license and own reliable vehicle required; regular travel throughout the Phoenix metro area is part of the role.
  • CPR/First Aid certification a plus
  • High School diploma or GED.

Compensation & Benefits

  • 1099 contractor employment, steady work with a mix of residential and commercial projects
  • Pay: $30 to $45/hour, based on experience and skill level
  • Direct mentorship and leadership trust from experienced owners
  • Opportunity for future benefits and growth as the company continues to expand
  • Variety in projects, no repetitive, one-note workdays

Why Pointer Electric

  • Be part of a young, fast-growing electrical company where your work directly impacts success
  • Work closely with ownership, your voice, ideas, and experience matter
  • Real opportunity to lead in the field, not just hold a title
  • Help shape company standards, processes, and culture from the ground up
  • Take pride in delivering high-quality, professional, and reliable electrical work
  • Make a meaningful impact in the local Phoenix community
