Contractor Apprentice information

What is a contractor apprentice?

A Contractor Apprentice job is an entry-level position where individuals learn the skills and knowledge needed to work in construction or contracting trades. Apprentices typically assist experienced contractors with tasks such as measuring, cutting materials, assembling structures, and following safety guidelines. The role provides hands-on training and may be part of a formal apprenticeship program that leads to certification or licensure. This position is ideal for those looking to gain experience and develop expertise in a specific trade, such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work.

What are the typical career advancement opportunities for a contractor apprentice?

As a Contractor Apprentice, you can expect to gain hands-on experience and learn from experienced professionals, which can pave the way to higher-level roles such as Journeyman, Lead Contractor, or even Project Manager over time. Advancement often depends on your performance, additional certifications, and completion of apprenticeship hours or training requirements. Many apprentices eventually specialize in areas like electrical, plumbing, or carpentry, or pursue contractor licensing to start their own business. Demonstrating strong work ethic, technical proficiency, and initiative increases your chances of progression within the construction field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the contractor apprentice position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contractor Apprentice, you need fundamental knowledge of construction practices, basic math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety protocols such as OSHA guidelines, and the ability to read blueprints are often required. Strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, effective communication, and reliability will help you stand out. These skills ensure you can perform tasks safely, support senior contractors effectively, and progress in the construction industry.

How much does a contractor apprentice make?

A contractor apprentice typically earns between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the specific trade. Apprentices often receive a gradually increasing wage as they gain skills and complete training programs, which may include on-the-job learning and technical coursework.

If you’re looking for a place where you can do great work, feel at home, and have some fun along the way, Ackard is the place to be.

What You’ll Do

As our next Apprentice Carpenter, you’ll report to our Lead Hand Carpenters and Site Supervisors and play a hands-on role supporting the Construction Team across all phases of residential renovations and custom home builds—from demolition and framing to exterior finishes.

Your day-to-day may include:

  • Taking direction from the Lead Hand, Site Supervisor, and Construction Manager.
  • Assisting with demolition, site prep, cleanup, salvaging materials, and maintaining a hazard-free work zone.
  • Loading and unloading materials, tools, and equipment, and distributing them according to plans or specs.
  • Helping frame foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using a variety of materials including wood, steel, and composites.
  • Supporting the installation of doors, windows, hardware, trim, and other finishing components.
  • Erecting and dismantling scaffolding, ladders, and concrete forms; mixing and pouring concrete when needed.
  • Operating or tending equipment like pumps, compressors, generators, and portable cement mixers.
  • Measuring, cutting, and shaping materials using hand and power tools, ensuring precision and quality.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches to support layout and construction tasks.
  • Working alongside sub-trades to meet project goals and timelines.
  • Participating in safety practices, including daily hazard assessments and weekly toolbox meetings.
  • Upholding all Ackard standards, procedures, and building codes on every project.

This role is a great fit for someone eager to build technical skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to high-quality residential projects in a supportive and values-driven environment.

What You Bring
We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about their work, eager to contribute to a team, and committed to delivering high-quality results. You’ll do well in this role if you:

  • Consistently produce high-quality work while maintaining professionalism.
  • Maintain a positive, professional demeanor with clients, sub-trades, and team members.
  • Have a solid understanding of tools and their proper use.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Analyze situations and make informed decisions.
  • Plan and organize tasks efficiently.

What We Offer

We believe great people deserve great support. Here's what you can expect when you work with us:

  • Be part of an award-winning residential renovation company with over 40 years of success and a strong track record of continued growth.
  • Competitive compensation that reflects your skills and experience.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits through Sun Life.
  • Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • Voluntary RRSP plan with company contributions.
  • Professional development, training, and career growth opportunities.
  • Paid personal and sick time.
  • Positive, team-driven culture built on collaboration and respect.
  • Birthday, work anniversary, and milestone recognition.
  • Christmas holiday shutdown.
  • Team-building and social events.
  • Strong commitment to work-life balance with little to no overtime.

Working Conditions
This position involves hands-on work in both interior and exterior residential construction environments. Team members must be comfortable working in variable conditions and adapting to the physical demands of a dynamic job site.

  • Work takes place on residential renovation and custom home build sites
  • Exposure to seasonal weather—heat, cold, rain, and snow when working outdoors
  • Frequently required to lift, carry, or move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs; occasional lifting of items up to 75 lbs with assistance
  • Regular tasks include standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and handling construction tools and materials
  • Work may be performed in confined, elevated, dusty, or noisy spaces
  • Use of ladders, scaffolding, and power/hand tools is frequent
  • Must wear appropriate PPE at all times (e.g., hard hat, safety boots, eye and ear protection)
  • Monday to Friday daytime schedule; minimal overtime and no overnight travel required

Work With Purpose
